If the plan is indeed to play Neal at WLB, then it's possible Leighton Vander Esch stays in the middle while Jaylon Smith takes on a edge role. Dan Quinn's defense has a "leo" position that could suit Smith perfectly in the nickel. Just have him rush the QB and not worry about coverage.

No matter what, Neal opens up a ton of options for the Cowboys. It's a nice problem to have.

One year, two year, it's not going to make a difference in the cap. But if you have a two year deal and the guy plays really well, you have a better chance at keeping him.

The thing about the one year deals is that the Cowboys know that once they leave they’ll get a compensatory pick for them. They believe on building via the draft and the more picks you have the more ammunition you have. It’s why they have 10 picks this year instead of 6.
