The Number 88 and Lamb

You're whining about us whining so come down off that high ground.

He has 88.. Whatever.. But this fairytale story about Jerry not forcing his new employee to wear it for marketing reasons is ridiculous.

No not whining, was just commenting about whining.

Smart of Jerry to market it though. Well, fans whine about him making money for keeping their team relevant.

I hope he makes more than 88 catches this season and I hope he ranks no higher than 88th in drops, not 2nd.

Other than that, I don't care what number he wears.

The Cowboys don't retire numbers. Giving a number of a Hall of Famer to a promising young rookie is the Cowboy way of honoring that number and remembering the past stars that wore them.

And the past is important because every second we spend is the past a second later. Here's a story:

After winning Super Bowl 6, many reporters circled Duane Thomas who had contributed greatly to the victory. They were kind of nervous around Duane because he had stopped talking to the press and was giving everyone the silent treatment. He was upset with the Cowboys about salary, he was upset with Tom Landry, referring to him as the "Plastic Man" (hence, my username).

Someone finally asked him if he thought they would be as successful running the ball and his one word answer was "obviously".

Someone then asked him what it felt like to play in the "ultimate game" to which he replied, "If this was the ultimate game then why is the NFL going to have another Super Bowl next year?"

His point was the fact that as soon as the Super Bowl was over, it became history. It was immediately in the "past".

Most Cowboy fans are aware that the Cowboys have played in 8 Super Bowls winning 5. At that particular time the Cowboys held both records. Then the Steelers came along and broke the SB wins record, recording their 5th and then 6th. That is now history and the Patriots are tied with them. The Cowboys are tied with the 49ers for 3rd place in championships. The Cowboys are in a three way tie with the Broncos and 49ers for Super Bowl appearances.

There has almost always been a #88 in the Cowboy Super Bowls as well as a #54. In fact two different Cowboys have been SB MVP's that wore #54.

This is all in the past but we remember and celebrate those past victories, every football fan celebrates their team's past accomplishments. For some, it's all they have.

He broke Bob Hayes record with the most catches by a rookie. Granted Hayes set the record when we only played 14 games.

Sorry, I find myself getting into really stupid arguments on here lately. I apologize for that dumb post.

And Hayes played on a running team in a running league.

True but Meredith targeted him quite a bit that season, after all there was not much in zone coverages and no one could run with Hayes. That changed quickly the following years. lol

I really wish Lamb would have chosen a different number than 88. I know he wanted a different number and was talked out of it by Jerry and others. I think Irvin asked him to wear it. Maybe Dez too?

The 88 just has too many connections to the past and I think the team needs a huge dose of future and less talk of the past.

We don’t do it with any other number. Didn’t give Emmitt and Elliott #33 or Romo and Dak #12.

Obviously you dont get it.

The 88 thing is different then other jersey numbers with the Cowboys. Its a number that is more or less passing the torch of the NEW stud WR in Dallas.

The question is why this number and no other number. Do you get that?

I just told you why genius. THIS number is more of a passing the torch thing with WR's. Its a special thing with THAT number ONLY.

Duh...........is this where you get all irate because you cant comprehend why?

This off season NFL allowed for number changes and when CeeDee was asked about taking #2 said he has grown fond of it. If Ceedee was dead set on it he could have taken it.

If he wanted 2 he would have had to buy out the inventory of all the 88 Lamb jerseys out there. Do you know how many that is for this heralded rookie for the most visible team in the league? I don't but it was a heckuva lot more than Jaylon Smith's jerseys out there and he paid close to 1/2 a mil to switch his number. Lamb is on a rookie salary so no way he's dropping that much cash for a number. He's not going to give the press ammo to start stuff about dissent between he and Jerry either. "Keep number, make millions" is a great business strategy.

I completely understand what you're saying. HOFer numbers should be retired. As far as "less talk of the past" undoubtedly, will never happen.

There are too many fans who witnessed the 5 SB championships. That's an experience that sets those fans apart from today's fans.

As yourself. :)

Am I a 'today's fan' who hasn't seen the SBs? I followed Dorsett as my childhood favorite player from Pitt to the Cowboys and witnessed a lot of history. I don't cling to that history as much as others, I guess. I just care more about the future than the past.

Here's what Michael Irvin told him: "If Jerry says you should wear 88, you wear 88. Please Jerry, and you are set for life. Piss off Jerry, and you have an enemy for life. So 10 or 88?"

Cee Dee Lamb aint stupid.

I'm both. I take great pride in the accomplishments of this team history and feel lucky to say I was able to witness it and even lucky to be able to go to the SB game in 76. I have seen a lot of great things over the years. However my focus is on the here and now, with this group of players and coaches. I hope to see them accomplish great things as a team and as individual players and add to the history of these franchise.

Who cares what numbers anyone wears? They are only useful for being able to tell what players are on the field and who made the play. Numbers mean nothing
