Last year though was not just about defensive problems as not having an off-season, extra practices, etc. really hurt a first year coaching staff and the players as well.

Fumbles, missed assignments, being out of position, wrong personnel on the field, etc. could be in some way attributed to many covid-related changes, limits and cancellations last year, but there will be no built-in excuses this year.

I am not giving them a free pass for last year by any means, but we should have a much better idea of the quality and capability of the coaching staff after this season.
This year is an important year for not only MM but players like Zeke, Jaylon, DLaw, Dak, LVE, Coop and a host of others.

I can't see giving ANYONE as much leeway as Garrett had.
I think a winning season is a realistic hope and maybe even winning the division, but let's not forget this will be a team depending on a lot of inexperienced rookies. We need to keep our expectations reasonable this year.

I don't think some will. My expectations are making the playoffs and looking like we belong. That might even be a high bar for this year, but I don't want us to waste time. It's on McCarthy with his offense back together to show that he can do it, even if he has to overcome a struggling defense.

yeah I would have hired saleh , the SF DC , young fiery and knows defense.
I am curious to see how he does with the jets.
He would have had more talent to work with had he came here.

I would have atleast liked an interview with him.

What sense does it make to hire an offensive HC who runs an entirely different scheme than your embedded OC? What does he contribute? Locker room speeches?

Locker room speeches?......and smashing watermelons ! that will get those guys to play better !

Thing is Mike gave jones boys all the right answers, and they fell in love, and heard bells !
he told them you get the players and I will coach them up ! SB here we come!:D

It's not his offense.
It's not his special teams.
It's not his defense.

The coordinators each run their units.
true, but he is their boss, and can tell them to change whatever he wants.
and He has to approve ST things like fake punts, onside kicks etc.

He could tell kellen I want balance, or more run plays.
He could have told nolan at game 3 , hey lets just go back to last years def scheme, the players know that.

He could have told dak to slide or go out of bounds, and not take hits, and try to run thru tackles !!!!!!!!!!;)
But he didnt and look what happened.

I read it. You Damned him for 90% of your post but then said oh but….. You’re a good poster. Don’t let the haters brainwash you to the hater side.
I’m skeptical but not willing to write him off as I explained in the post. At the end of the day his success is ours so hoping he does well, just don’t have the best feeling.

I'd like to know what criteria they were looking for. Let's face it our offense could use more refining in the RedZone but is far from our weakness. A defensive minded HC would have been better possibly. I do like the tassel hire though.
Yeah Fassel was a good hire for sure. After Garrett I was looking for some youth and innovation. Obviously a defensive guy would’ve been best with Moore being able to handle the O, but I wouldn’t make it a deal-breaker.

Looking back on it, Matt Rhule (despite the W-L record in 2020 that team is on the way up) or LaFluer (even though having ARod is a cheat code) would’ve been better hires. But at the time I wouldn’t have been enthusiastic about either hire over Mike.

Make the divisional round of the playoffs and still get fired? I'd be shocked.

People won't want to hear it but after a virtual offseason and now Hard Knocks, I won't really be able to blame McCarthy for a second losing season if it comes to that.

Giving him partial blame, okay, but do you think he really wants those cameras at training camp? He doesn't.
Those cameras following him around will prevent him from eating a couple dozen doughnuts while the other coaches are doing his job.

Bingo!!!!!! He ( all NFL coaches IMO) gets a freebie for 2020. I will grade him hard after this season.
The 2020 season has too many excuses to make an accurate judgement and with the Hard Knocks distraction , he is well on his way to having his first two seasons loaded with excuses that can give him another year or two in Dallas.

McCarthy is done either way after this season unless the Cowboys just make the playoffs and lose. If they make the NFC championship game it will because of the offense and defensive improvement. Moore/Quinn would get all the credit. Moore would be the hot coaching prospect There is no way the Jones family would let the paper boy leave Dallas.

My feeling too. Moore is Jerry's second chance at the Boy Genius that Jerry Made into a HC. McCarthy is a seat warmer for Moore.

We were beyond awful even with Dak.
A lot of posters seems to overlook the fact that Dallas was horrible when Dak was healthy. At no point last season did Dallas give any indication of being a decent team. They was struggling to live up to the below average label.

Cowboys fans dont like any HC Jerry hires,,,,,they bash them all....(Garrett was deserving tho). Why dont the fans just chill....and the let the coach..coach and players play......MM is in a no-win situation with the fans.....he loses its his fault...they win its because of DAK..... No respect either way...but that goes with the territory of being the Cowboys HC. Its hard to turn around a Franchise use to losing for the last 25years
Jerry has only one good HC hiring since he bought the team and that hire was Jimmy Johnson. Why don’t the fans chill? We want to see a well coached team of winners in Dallas, that’s why we don’t chill. Of course we hate the Jerry HC hires. The type of HC that Jerry hires is yes men that has a very soft coaching personality. That is the total opposite of what a Cowboys HC should be. Garrett was no worse than any of the other HC hires. MM done his best job of impersonating Garrett’s on-field coaching decisions last year and it only proved that Garrett was not the worse HC to coach Dallas in the last 25 years. Fans have every reason to be ticked off. My question is why are you not furious about the HCs that Jerry has hired in the last 25 years?

That old theory is 100% B.S.. This is just a baseless rumor repeated on the internet. It simply did not happen. Phillips says so himself, as do many other coaches in the know.

I challenge anyone to provide credible evidence of this.
I would love to hear or read Phillips' version then. Got a link?

He has more HC potential than any coach in Dallas, but that is not saying much.

Kellen Moore? He's little more than a protégé of Jason Garrett, and if there's anything we don't need, it's more of Jason Garrett.

I would hope he is not a Garrett protege. If so, he would be the first.

Really???

On a side note, If Moore is ever HC, the players will freely walk all over him doing whatever the hell they want....I see him as having ZERO control of a locker room!!!

Moore is gonna be the next coach. It’s the perfect status quo transition.

All of the suckers on here who clap for everything will applaud it and Jerry has a coach that still allows him to run the circus the way he see’s fit.

The Cowboys are not interested in winning if it comes at the expense of Jerry Jones ego.

I hope you're mistaken about Moore being our next HC Catch.
