None at all. When Kazee and Hooker struggle, I expect we put Wilson at FS and Neal at ss.
And that is okay too.

At least there are some options with it. Think about previous years around this time.

Does anyone want Kavon Frazier, George Iloka or Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix, instead? I mean, one year our backup safety behind Heath entering camp was Jameill Showers.

Kazee is decent. Never going to be what I would call a "good" starter but can be NFL average or maybe a drop below (FS# 20-23ish?) which is still an upgrade for us back there. If you are playing Kazee every down it will be better hopefully than we have had recently but still not a strong spot. Hooker is just a much better player and with health is a big upgrade. I'd love to see us pair them both in the nickel/dime with Hooker and Wilson starting. Hooker has the potential to be the best safety we have had in a long time. Having both gives us some needed depth because both being healthy for 17 games may not be too likely.

Kazee had 7 int his first season as a FS. Then got injured. Run defense is suspect but he's a ball magnet.

I don't see how it can be any worse than marching out the likes of Jeff Heath and Darian Thompson out there in previous years.

And honestly, you can put Woods in that group too.

:hammer:

Bingo! That’s an absolute limbo bar of low expectations.

And 3 his next and zero in 4 games his next. Interceptions in the short run are as related to scheme, pass rush, game situation and luck as they are being a ball magnet. I hope he can do something similar to those numbers here and I do think he has some ball skills that will help us. But, there is a lot more to playing safety than getting interceptions. Playing a guy every down that is "suspect" as you put it against the run is bad when you have a run defense like we have recently (and I'll believe it's going to be significantly better when i see it). I like Kazee to start if we must and to use to his strengths and thought it was a great move to sign him to a really team friendly deal, but If we sign Hooker and he is healthy from day 1, I don't see any chance Kazee starts over him. As I said, I would like to see Kazee back there in passing situations teamed with Hooker and to rotate in a little as well and to start if/when Hooker is hurt. Now if we had a top SS and better corners to play next to him I'd feel better about Kazee playing every down as it would take a lot of pressure off of him. I like Wilson going back to the preseason of his first year when he just seemed to show up every game, but I think people are expecting a little too much too soon out of him.

One of the big keys to signing both Kazee and Hooker is we hedge our bets and hopefully at least one is healthy

Yeah, it isn't like we were better at FS last year. I'd prefer that the team address the position with high-quality youth, but that hasn't happened. Be nice if Hooker resurrects his career here and fixes that problem. It's unlikely, but it would certainly be welcomed. He's still quite young at 25.
Yes, would of liked Grant or Moehrig more, but both have legit ball skills. If they can create some turnovers, that could be the difference in some wins and losses.

I wonder if they keep a flex player like Muku or even Robinson for the last spot. I think if Hooker does sign, that ends the Thompson experiment.

I’m wondering about the numbers too. I figure they keep Wilson and Kearse for strong safety and Kazee and Mukuamu at free safety. Keeping Hooker makes five at safety which would be one more than I expected.

They usually keep 4-5 at the position. The last spot could come down to Muku or Robinson, if you are a backup player, you must be a special teams core player. Something to watch as camp goes on.

All the secondary spots look to be a tight numbers game. Guys like Goodwin on special teams make things tough for guys like Robinson and likely one of these safeties.

It shouldn't though....and I do think Goodwin is a good special teams player but I've never been for keeping guys just because they play special teams. I don't want to lose a corner in favor of Goodwin. They probably feel they can do that but I personally don't get it.

I hear ya. I’m not crazy about that either but at the same time I understand their position.

I think I've sadly become so numb to our safety play that at this point I'm focused about everyone in front of them. And as crazy as it sounds...Kazee and Hooker are probably the best talents we've had back there in a long time at that position. Hell probably even with their limitations. I'm not optimistic about it but I'm cautiously intrigued....

Talent looks good on paper. Need to see it on the field and the issue that continues to haunt these guys is health.

Yeah and I'm pretty sure that will be the case. Why can my special teams coach coach my guys up to play that role? I understand special teams is a facet of the game that is important but my goodness....its always these Jeff Heath and Keith Davis types......probably more so the Keith Davis but a guy who's strictly on this team to play special teams. Unless they are a special team ace I Don't get why Reggie Robinson can't do what Goodwin can.
