Kazee had 7 int his first season as a FS. Then got injured. Run defense is suspect but he's a ball magnet.
And 3 his next and zero in 4 games his next. Interceptions in the short run are as related to scheme, pass rush, game situation and luck as they are being a ball magnet. I hope he can do something similar to those numbers here and I do think he has some ball skills that will help us. But, there is a lot more to playing safety than getting interceptions. Playing a guy every down that is "suspect" as you put it against the run is bad when you have a run defense like we have recently (and I'll believe it's going to be significantly better when i see it). I like Kazee to start if we must and to use to his strengths and thought it was a great move to sign him to a really team friendly deal, but If we sign Hooker and he is healthy from day 1, I don't see any chance Kazee starts over him. As I said, I would like to see Kazee back there in passing situations teamed with Hooker and to rotate in a little as well and to start if/when Hooker is hurt. Now if we had a top SS and better corners to play next to him I'd feel better about Kazee playing every down as it would take a lot of pressure off of him. I like Wilson going back to the preseason of his first year when he just seemed to show up every game, but I think people are expecting a little too much too soon out of him.
One of the big keys to signing both Kazee and Hooker is we hedge our bets and hopefully at least one is healthy
