Did Chris Godwin commit OPI on key catch? Cowboys, Buccaneers weigh in on controversy

Chris Godwin's fourth-quarter catch proved to be a critical turning point for the Buccaneers, but some wondered whether the receiver pushed off.

TAMPA — Cowboys cornerback Jourdan Lewis trailed Buccaneers receiver Chris Godwin down the left sideline. Godwin pinned Lewis with his left arm, Lewis aiming to maintain his own balance by grabbing Godwin with his right. Then a dart from Tom Brady arrived at the 18-yard line, Godwin pivoting his frame to welcome it as Lewis tumbled backward onto the field.

A push? Offensive pass interference? Anything flag-worthy about the contact exchanged on the 24-yard reception that set up the Buccaneers’ game-winning field goal?

“That’s Chris,” Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians said after Tampa Bay’s 31-29 win. “He’s gonna fight for every inch and sometimes, you know he got a good lick on him. But he’s going to bounce right back and make that big play.”

Godwin said he wasn’t worried.

“No, no, no,” emphasized the receiver after catching nine of 14 targets for 105 yards, a touchdown and a fumble. “Never worry about offensive pass interference. Just try to go out there and make a play.

“I think it was a little hand-fighting on both parts. He had some good coverage, it was a great pass and I tried to make a play for my team.”

I don't like making excuses for a loss after the game. I have seen worse OPI not called. I thought the refs let a lot go on both sides, especially in the trenches. The Cowboys deserved the holding penalties they got, although the one on Tyron Smith was a little nit-picky compared to some of the holding they let go. The fact is the Cowboys were beaten because the offense failed to sustain a drive with under 2 minutes to go in the game and the defense failed to stop the Bucs after that. Bot failures looked a lot like the Cowboys of the last few years.

The holding call against Conner Williams towards the end of the game was massive. It negated a first down and put us in a big hole.

Without the call we milk the clock and Brady doesn’t have enough time to engineer another game winning drive.

Sure but Dallas doesn’t know how to milk a clock for the win. Penalty or turnover and the Cowboys almost always give the opposing QB a chance to win the game in these situations.....it’s what they do

Yet people were trying to claim we got cheated with that one. Williams practically tore off his jersey for a fabric sample.

As an aside, did we ever have the chance to draft Vita Vea? That guy was awesome last night. He made Biadazz into Punkazz on that one play.

None of the players actually made excuses. All those quoted in the article said it shouldn't have come down to a ref's call.

Great point. Some posters around here have a hard time separating what we say from what the team says and does. They take other fans opinions and takes as coming from the actual cowboys team. I've always found this lack of ability to separate realities interesting.

The holding call was completely justified.

No excuses here. Vita Vea was incredible at the end.

All I’m saying is that if Conner Williams doesn’t get beat on that play we likely win.

Vea abused both Connors too. He's a load to block one on one.

Vea is an incredible athlete and player. That dude can’t be handled one on one. Even more impressive to me was that he was still so fresh at the end of that game. He was even in there on offense short yardage! And despite his size and the heat and humidity he was barely sweating either. Just amazing.

Tons of people on the board wanted him really bad, but yeah, no chance. There was some faint glimmer of hope he'd slide but he went 12th and the Cowboys drafted 19th and got LVE.

Ah, okay, thanks. Remember people wanting him. Worth a trade up in hindsight but you just never know.

I wish they would have given some help in the middle on Vita Vea. Dude was impossible to block one on one.

I think we would have if he'd have made it to us. We've ended up in a poor draft spot for the top DTs the last few years. Of course, some of that is what you manufacture. If you want certain players, sometimes you have to go get them.

You guys do know Vea had ZERO tackles, right. He basically did nothing until that final drive when he decided to start playing. No doubt he is a monster, but he wasn't all that last night. Just sayin....
