Mike McCarthy has been rightly criticized (in my opinion) for some of his in-game management issues. It’s still a concern for me. BUT- I also believe in giving credit where credit is due as well.

Here’s where Big Mac and his staff deserve a ton of credit through 4 games:
  1. Next Man Up working- Unlike the previous coaching staff of the Clapper, this staff has proven that you can still play well and win some games with several starters out. Under Garrett, the loss of a starter- on either side of the ball- was practically a guaranteed loss. Followed by excuses. This staff should be commended for making “next man up” mean something.
  2. This staff uses the whole roster. I’ve been so impressed with the use of lots of players in creative ways. Some examples:
    • Tony Pollard- getting 12-15 touches a game as opposed to 2-5 under Garrett. Gives the running game more punch and preserves Zeke more.
    • Using Micah Parsons all over the field and in different positions besides LB.
    • Connor McGovern being used as a fullback. McGovern is being used on the OL and the backfield.
  3. Players are being developed- Its great to see young players being patiently coached and developed. Examples:
    • Terrance Steele- what a difference a year makes. This guy is at least an excellent swing T now. Maybe even a future starter.
    • Cedric Wilson- in his fourth season, he has become more than a just a backup WR. He’s provided some excellent plays.
    • This list could go on and on.
Mike McCarthy and his staff deserve some credit. This is a much better team because of some coaching and development. Would this have happened under Garrett? Hahaha! It’s early, but some credit is deserved.

Also the team has great camaraderie. They all are happy for each other. No one player feels above any other players. They are a team.
So give that credit to the coaching staff as well.

You listen to the post game PC's, the players all praise each other as well as the coaches.

McCarthy is by far the weakest link in an otherwise good chain.

I don't see anyway he keeps his job after this season without a Super Bowl win. He's not coached a single clean game yet and Jerry will not allow his home grown coach (Kellen Moore) to just walk into someone else arms.

Exactly. And to add:
  • Game planning for the specific opponent
    • It seems that the coaches understands the strength and weakness of their opponents that week and have adjusted game plans accordingly
  • Halftime adjustments
    • This team went into halftime down by 1 after having a less-than-great 1st Half, but came out and kicked some you-know-what after halftime

McCarthy is great at his job.

He made the decision to hire his Coordinators and hold them accountable.

He has built and is building a winning culture for all players to thrive.

He has influenced the building of defensive talent.

He is wise enough to leave the offense alone and tweak it.

Game/time management could be better. But would rather have the culture, the coaching and the talent.

It’s difficult to see this is a SB or bust season for Fat Mikey.

He has done in two years what Garrett always preached about ........ Now we could fall on our face tommorow, but as for now I am excited about football again.

Maybe Kellen Moore isn’t interested in being a head guy yet?

He’s probably a multi multi millionaire already after playing NFL QB.

Also, he may just have a good time coordinating and calling plays without all of the extra responsibility a HC has.

Im probably just wishful thinking but there has to be some benefits to just staying in his current role.

Dallas can’t lose him though at this point. The Cowboys preach continuity… That leaves if Kellen does.

Not sure if there's a middle ground to like between Bob's OP and Catch17's response.

It is unfortunate that I am naturally not a big Mac supporter based on his previous resume or his current job's in game decision making as the head guy.

In this instance I lean more towards Moore and Quinn carrying him. But all the points made in the OP did happen while Mac was HC even if maybe he wasn't directly responsible. So there's that.

I think the job Philbin has done coaching up the OL depth is the absolute unsung hero of the team's success as well so he definitely deserves a great deal of credit as well.

Ultimately I’m going to give Jethro credit. He’s the one who insisted on retaining Moore. And on bringing in another DC. Who are IMO the ones making a difference not Mm.

His questionable in game decisions from going for it on 4th downs in our territory almost routinely now along with his extra point debacles not to mention his time clock Mgmt seems certain to cost us dearly at some point.

I’d argue our OC and DC have been the difference not our HC.

McCarthy kind of reminds me of Garrett in that his coordinators really define what he does, but the toxicity doesn't exist as McCarthy isn't as worried about one of the coordinators taking his job.

For example, when Richard and Marinelli were here, the defense looked great at first but during the last year of the duo, we didn't know if it was Marinelli's defense or Richard's defense. People were complaining about Kellen being handcuffed and forced to use the 'Garrett playbook'. The environment seems less toxic for coordinators honestly.

Interestingly enough, it seems like Garrett is doing a lot better going back to coordinator and not having to look over his shoulder at some potential young hotshot under him taking his job.

He almost left for Boise St last year. Like all OC he’ll leave when a NFL team makes him the right offer. He might even be able to choose which situation suits him best.
