Liked him at PSU, and thought he played well in the absence of Martin last season.
Your comment is nothing more than assuming I assumed.
It's a difficult comparison between the Connors because they're different types of players.
- Some OL coaches would prefer one while other OL coaches would prefer the other.
- Connor Williams would have been the prototype for infamous Zone Blocking Guru Alex Gibbs.
- Gibbs would sacrifice size/power for quickness/agility.
- CW has as good of foot quickness and agility as just about any OL in the league.
- Only early years Tryon had better quickness/ability with regards to Cowboys players.
- Connor McGovern would have been the choice of OL Tony Wise with the early nineties Cowboys (i.e. Power-man blocking).
- CM plays with a better base (i.e. He is harder to get off-balance).
- CW is actually very strong with regards to weight room strength, but his lower body lacks bulk.
- CM and CW might weight about the same, but CM's center of gravity is probably 6" lower.
- McGovern is not as good as CW with regards to awareness on stunts/blitzes.
- CW is also much better than CM with regards to 2nd level blocking in the run game.
- 2nd level blocking is more about awareness and agility than power. OLinemen blocking LBs and DBs.
- We've seen where TE Schultz is OK blocking inline but struggles to block in space.
- Connor Williams literally has better agility and short area quickness than TE Schultz.
Future:
-
Both CW and La'el are likely gone next year. They won't pay La'el 10M unless Tyron retires and Steele moves to LT.
- Matt Farniok might push for playing time next year. He has been active for the majority of games this season.
- For a rookie late round pick, Farniok was impressive in the preseason at both OG and OC. Very good technically.
- Josh Ball would have been a 2nd or possibly 1st round pick if he had stayed at Florida State (without the DV issue).
- He was a better player at Florida State in 2017 as a redshirt freshman than Terence Steele was in 2020 as a Senior.
- Ball has all the tools to play LT. He's not the freak athlete like Tyron (nobody else is either), but is physically very similar to 8x All-Pro Joe Thomas.
- The problem is that the draft comes before they get to see Josh Ball in the preseason. It would be hard to bypass an OT if a legit LT prospect is available.
