The time is right to switch to a 3-4 base

Yes I know we play nickel most of the time, but I think going forward we need to be thinking how we can build the DEF around Parsons. To me, he primarily needs to line up as an OLB in a 3-4 scheme and that is the scheme we need for the next 10 years. I would like to see priority given to drafting an OLB on the other side along with a true Nose Tackle. I am assuming D-Law will not be back and if he does I don't have a lot of confidence he can hold up for a full season. Either way I am not holding back Parsons.

My question is what would the PATS do with someone like Parsons? they would build around him in a scheme best suited to his talents. His best skill his rushing the passer.

Urban (I would bring him back on a cheap deal), Basham come from this scheme and I want players signed who can slot in.

Other teams are now switching to the 3-4 (Raiders, Vikings) so it is very popular now and I know we are a hybrid DEF. But I think primarily we should be building a 3-4.

Why pigeon hole Parsons? Continue using him as a chess piece based on matchups every week

Because long-term I don't think this is the best way to maximise his talent. In a 3-4 with sufficient depth at ILB you can move him around anyway

Not interested in a 3-4 defense, been down that road already...

I believe (although I don't have the link) our best season statistically was under Parcells or Phillips. But it's not about the past it's what is best going forward

If you knew that nickel was base , as you claim, this wouldn’t be nearly as important as you think it is.

the key to parsons being as successful as he was last season, is moving him around and not letting the defense key in on him so easily. The posters on this board that want to stick him in one place and leave him there will make him worse than what he is

as soon as defense starts to play well...change scheme???

Build the scheme around Parsons.
Incredibly it wasn't until Week 3 we seem to realise he could play off the edge full=time if needed

We don't know that.

They play a hybrid scheme now, where he lines up all over the front 7. You also would like to keep him as the mike linebacker in run situations. Quinn has already created a scheme around Parsons, now it's just adding to it.

If it was 2002, sure go to a 3-4 and let Parsons shine killing the QB.

But now, nah. I prefer having Parsons being able to line up as the LDE, then ILB, then OLB etc. And the offense has to account for him pass rushing in any lineup

additionally, the defense is the one part of the team that IS making progress. Quinn and parsons are just making this defense right the ship……I think we need to let this plan continue to improve and evaluate it later.

if anything. I’d like to see the offense re-schemed….

I agree you need to build the defense around Parsons, but when the team plays more nickel than anything else wouldn't it be better to build around a nickel package rather than a 3-4? I'd like to see Dallas get better along the defensive line and it doesn't have to be fat boys. Big physical defensive linemen that can keep #11 free to roam after the football. A big physical edge rusher that could kick inside when #11 comes to the line. A good coverage LB (maybe it's Cox) that can play in space while #11 is playing in the backfield. I don't really care what base scheme they run, it's obvious the positions that need to be upgraded in order to make #11 the best he can be.
