If Jerry was willing to pay Gregory $70 million

There are comparable, if not better, options at DE in FA.

If you were willing to spend that on Gregory, there's no reason to not be willing to spend that on another edge player - Miller, etc. That ZaDarius Smith contract was totally manageable. He's been a better edge player than Gregory before he got hurt last year in GB.

But we weren't willing to make an offer on a player that is now getting paid less than Gregory.

Don't let the front office spin this after the fact.

Agreed. Miller is just sitting there. If they don’t move on him and Wagner— then two options are likely:

1. they are arrogant, incompetent, and cheap
2. They are clearing the books for a big reset in 2023 with Payton as HC

(or option 3– all of the above)

How did they view RG better than Chandler Jones is my question.

Granted Jones got more but not significantly more.

Again, I don't think they actually have a plan. It's basically let's sign some of our own if we can and then if we can't just wait it out and sign some low hanging fruit and we'll trot out the yearly, "We build through the draft" BS they love to sling around.

But even that makes no sense. So Randy Gregory was the difference between not reseting or clearing the books for 2023?

The simplest answer is the most likely. If they don't do anything with that money they were slotting to Gregory, they just simply are incompetent at roster building.

It's all about validating how smart they are for their draft selections. Smh

Fans refuse to believe that the Joneses would spend more to retain one of their own than they would be bring in a better outside FA, but that has been their MO for the past 10 years. The only exception to that was trading for Cooper, which shows that they have to be absolutely desperate to make such a move. No one should be surprised at all based on the pattern that has been established if the only vet DE the team brings in is a cheap one on a one- or two-year deal. This is their FA philosophy and there's been no indication from them that they plan to change it. If anything, Stephen Jones has made it clear that they plan to continue doing things the way they have been.

Gonna be really hard to accept if the Cowboys don't sign either Bobby Wagner or Von Miller.

Oh I think they have a plan. We're seeing it.

This is Jerry’s problem. He falls in love with his own players. Then overpays them!

What's sad is that they probably SHOULDN'T even sign those guys for what they will demand at their ages...but they've sat on their hands for so long they really have no choice if they want to improve this team for this year.

Imagine what happens in 2023 though. The cap shoots up and FAs sign record contracts to the extent of which we've never seen before. It will be the mother of all ridiculous contracts off season. This is the one to take advantage. Next year will be mayhem.

Oh, they didn't get to Chandler Jones yet. They are still busy to sign their own guys and lick their wounds behind Gregory.

It looks like they did all this restructuring and maneuvering specifically to get Gregory. And now that they messed that up, plan B is literally nothing. They refuse to invest in other players because they don't 'know' them and because they've been burned before. But they don't realize that they've burned with this cautious approach too, because they always head into the draft with 4-5 needs and only ever fill one or two. Always avoiding the real long term needs, OL, DL, S, so that we fill the new holes we created through inaction in free agency
