Was it not because of the voiding of guarantees for fines, not suspensions? Suspensions I get. Fines I do not. If that was the case, I'd bolt too.

The issue I have is this:

1) Agent claims "never in 30 years have I seen this language" and that it was a "last minute language" change.
a. That same language is in Gregory's last contract as well as La'El Collins (who Shaffer also represents) and
b. There was no last minute change. They agreed numbers, the Cowboys sent their standard contract. It wasn't a last minute change, it was language the Cowboys always use.
2) It sounds like they never even talked to the Cowboys about the language. No "hey - what is this language? We don't like it." No "Denver is willing to give us the same contract without this language." Instead, it reads like the Agent found something to be flummoxed about, got Gregory all riled up and just DROPPED the Cowboys.

Makes me feel like the agent was not dealing in good faith, at all. Now possibly the Agent and Gregory look at it as the Denver Broncos took the TIME to woo Gregory. Hours of listening, negotiation, etc. Cowboys just swoop in without all that hard work and relationship building and say yeah - you negotiated a great contract, we'll match that stay at home we love you and they didn't want to go through it all again on details when they already had the contract they wanted. Fine. And I can agree that language maybe is stupid and needlessly complicated. But the Gregory camp went out of their way to make it sound like the Cowboys tried to sneak something punitive in to Gregory last minute and that it was all about trust and respect, which really seems not to be the case to me.

I was a big Gregory fan and think that when he was healthy he was great, but good Riddance. Best of luck in the AFC West.

I don't know about that. If Denver's contract doesn't have the terms in it and the Cowboys' did, then that is a true difference, shenanigans at play or not. I'm not hearing that the team offered or would have offered to drop the language so if that was a sticking point, then that's cause for a break if one side decides it is.

So you're saying that Gregory's and Collins' previous contracts have a forfeiture of guarantees for fines, not suspensions?

I'm glad Gregory has found a home. It's time for us to move on and look forward to a post season appearance in the 2022
season. I see good things happening to this team....

I like all the “who cares” comments when the agent says the Cowboys are trying to include language in contracts no other team in the NFL is.

It’s a problem.

Doesn’t matter what you think of Gregory.

that’s all fine but not how the agent characterized it. They said “added language at the last minute” which apparently is not true - it’s their standard contract. In this story, he’s no longer saying last minute, just that it’s not something he’s ever seen. And it was posted that this language is standard for cowboys contracts.

I have no problem with them deciding to choose the team that has less restrictive language but don’t try to act like the cowboys are doing something sneaky. It’s dumb that the Cowboys have something like that in the contracts and they never even use it, but agent is being a bad actor here

Btw - Gregory still hasn’t signed in Denver. Came out today that they are still working on the details.

The most troubling thing about this is the level of incompetence of S Jones. Jerry essential l tried to save the deal. Folks when the young one takes total control there will be dark days the likes this franchise has never seen.
This makes no sense. Stephen offered low, but Jerry upped the ante when Gregory was threatening to go to Denver. This is all Jerry’s doing, not Stephen’s.

The story here doesn't sound like a backtrack, just added context according to them. I just find it odd that it got to the point of being widely reported that Gregory was coming back to the Cowboys and then "something" happened to reverse that. If you're saying the language was in every Cowboys contract and they should have expected to see it, why have it get out that Gregory definitely was returning? It's like saying that Gregory and his agent did it on purpose. The agent would be risking any future dealings with the Cowboys for his representatives if he pulled a clown move like that. Just doesn't add up, especially if there actually is a difference in language between the 2 contract offers.

This doesn't have to be one party's "fault". The Cowboys wanted what they say is standard language to cover themselves if Gregory messes up again. Sounds smart to me.

Gregory had the same money without those possible guarantee voids from Denver. Even if he feels great and has zero plans to make mistakes (who does) then he's also smart for taking the same deal from Denver without the language.

If he plays well in Denver, the Cowboys look conservative for not trusting RG. If he underplays or gets suspended, the Cowboys will look great in hindsight.

Either way, both teams took a stance and RG picked the best one for himself. Let's all move on!
Best post on the subject - kudos.

I still believe Randy’s agent instigated the move to Denver because he lives in Denver and has ties to the Broncos.Randy if he wanted certain language removed from the contract he could have spoken.directly to Jerry himself after everything Jerry did for him the last few years.Randy and his agent used the language in the contract as a excuse to sign with Denver they both wanted to go.I am happy that Randy got paid but disappointed that he did not reach out and talk to Jerry after Jerry stood by him all this time.

I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but I think winning is one of the least concerns for 95% of the players. They want money. And it doesn't matter how much they already have, they'll move heaven and earth to get more. They'll pick up their entire family, move across the country to a winter wasteland for 2 million more on a 100M dollar contract. You think Rodgers cares if Adams plays for the Packers anymore? I think money messes with people's brains. Like a sickness.

i don’t disagree, but in this case something else is up if he’s effectively taking less money with taxes.

but yeah In general I’m with you.

The agent had/has two players on the Cowboys. Gregory and Collins. Collins released, Gregory elsewhere. They had an agreement in numbers, then they backed out. The facts we have is that it's been reported that language is in EVERY contract the Cowboys have except Prescott, including the last two that Gregory had and that Collins had. The story from the agent is that other teams don't do it - he originally leaked it as "last minute contract language" but that seems to have changed to they just don't like it.

Every fact we have available seems to tell me that they just decided NAH and moved to the other team. No discussion, negotiation, etc. And the characterization that the Cowboys tried to "sneak" it in or were being unreasonable doesn't hold water. Don't get me wrong - I think the clause is un-reasonable - but call the Cowboys and talk about getting it taken out. Don't just say nah I'm good and then try to paint the team as though they "snuck" it in and that this is all about trust.

Honest question, do you think Randy Gregory has any clue about taxes? Might as well ask him about rocket science. The dude doesn't strike me as a sharp tool In fact, most people don't think about that.

I have the pleasure of working with and for the public. I can tell you that the general public is as dumb as rocks when it comes to any type of free thinking. You don't realize this unless you work with them.

It really sounds like BS spin from the agent to me.

Randy made the right decision.

The Cowboys front office need to be a little more humble in these negotiations.

That same language was in Collins' contract? Do you have a copy of those details handy? If you do, I'd really like to see it. How do you know there was no last minute change? You're making assumptions about which you don't really know the facts.

You're simply believing the Jones family, known liars, vs. Gregory's agent.

His agent may very well be a first-class liar, but we know Jerry & his son are snakeoil salesmen from the beginning.
