Was it not because of the voiding of guarantees for fines, not suspensions? Suspensions I get. Fines I do not. If that was the case, I'd bolt too.
The issue I have is this:
1) Agent claims "never in 30 years have I seen this language" and that it was a "last minute language" change.
a. That same language is in Gregory's last contract as well as La'El Collins (who Shaffer also represents) and
b. There was no last minute change. They agreed numbers, the Cowboys sent their standard contract. It wasn't a last minute change, it was language the Cowboys always use.
2) It sounds like they never even talked to the Cowboys about the language. No "hey - what is this language? We don't like it." No "Denver is willing to give us the same contract without this language." Instead, it reads like the Agent found something to be flummoxed about, got Gregory all riled up and just DROPPED the Cowboys. b. There was no last minute change. They agreed numbers, the Cowboys sent their standard contract. It wasn't a last minute change, it was language the Cowboys always use.
Makes me feel like the agent was not dealing in good faith, at all. Now possibly the Agent and Gregory look at it as the Denver Broncos took the TIME to woo Gregory. Hours of listening, negotiation, etc. Cowboys just swoop in without all that hard work and relationship building and say yeah - you negotiated a great contract, we'll match that stay at home we love you and they didn't want to go through it all again on details when they already had the contract they wanted. Fine. And I can agree that language maybe is stupid and needlessly complicated. But the Gregory camp went out of their way to make it sound like the Cowboys tried to sneak something punitive in to Gregory last minute and that it was all about trust and respect, which really seems not to be the case to me.
I was a big Gregory fan and think that when he was healthy he was great, but good Riddance. Best of luck in the AFC West.
