This weeks debate is in the merits of trading up to get the player you covet. This comes on the heals of Jerry Jones saying essentially he is looking for another Micah or Lamb. Our last two trade ups in round 1 are both compelling arguments for and against. 2010, Dez Bryant and 2012 Morris Claiborne.

This weeks debate: Would trading up from 24 to get an impact player be wise for the Cowboys

But there isnt a Micah nor a Lamb in this draft.....so the answer's a no. The value is 2nd/3rd round, we should be trading down.

Micah no, but there are Lamb caliber players in this draft. With Lamb, they had him ranked 6th in that class and he dropped. When they talk about "another Lamb", I believe they are talking about that type of value

I don't like it. Hit rates are too low, even in the first round, to bet additional resources that you're right about the guy you like. In general, you want more lottery tickets, not fewer.

Leave it to Jerry to talk about moving up when it's obvious he should be looking to add picks. He's Bizarro World GM.

Outside top 5 prospects, have zero interest in moving up. This is truly the yr to trade back and get as many top 100 picks as possible
Fwiw our last two players aquired with the extra pick in a 1st round trade down were JJ Wilcox and Chauncey Golston

Ill say this. If its between Trevor Penning or Zion Johnson and a JJ Wilcox or Chauncey Golston caliber player, I take Penning every time

Depends on the target player and what they would have to give up to get him.

From 24 into the top 8 would be costly and who are they going to get? They don't need a QB and there isn't one worth moving up for in this draft and this draft seems pretty well stocked with OL, DL and WR.

There were two wow factor players before this season, Neal at OT and Davis at DT and neither lived up to the billing so moving up for one of them would be risky.

If GB and KC do not move up for a WR and 1 of the Power 5 falls, they should trade down.

This is a quantity draft and the Cowboys would be well served to get multiple OL, DL and LB's.

Just keep in mind this isn’t a normal class due to Covid and college players getting the extra yr, more depth then a usual draft class

Keep in mind back in 2013, it was said to be one of the deepest classes in a long time and an opportunity to trade down would be invaluable. We had an opportunity to do that, and ended up drafting Wilcox

The only players I would trade up for would be a DE or OT.

well Micah and Lamb were either trade downs or stay puts so I dont see that as good examples. Trade down might be OK depending on the number of targets and the move down slots.
I know the question is move up and Im sure the team has more information then we have.

They have a better record recently with day 2 selections. Give me more darts or ammo to move up later

I am all for trading up IF it is for the "right" guy.
Lloyd or Dean maybe, but I don't think so.
An OT -- not really.
Would I use a couple of 5's to move up in the 1st to take JDavis......absolutely. He is the only player I see that "might" be an impact player for the Dallas Cowboys.

With that said, is there a DE that they have found that drops? I doubt it but maybe.

I am not at all opposed to trading up, just want it to be no more than 2 - 5th's added -- so not very far up -- and I want it to be an impact player, not a needed one.

If you need him, just wait and draft the best player available at that time.

If you are only going to get one player per draft that is a difference maker then I say, "go for it". Nab the elite player at a position of need.

Imagine if every draft had a micah Parsons type of impact.

First of all, to be more accurate, Jerry said in the first three rounds, not just the first. I would be all for adding a top 100 pick for some day 3 picks. Four top 100 picks could really move the needle in terms of getting players that could help in their rookie season. The Lamb/Parsons comment was in the context of reasons for not taking an OL at 24.

Outside of Murray and Gallup even our better 3rd rounders hits have been average at best. In the last 15 years, only Crawford, Terence Williams, Jourdan Lewis, and Gallup have gotten 2nd contracts from us. Gallup is the only one of them that is really notable. Its too early to tell with Gallimore and Odighizuwa, but I dont think either are any better than Maliek Collins was.

If I sacrifice that because Dez Bryant 2010 situation arrises (Penning, Davis, Johnson) Im not losing any sleep over pulling the trigger

Agree, and I would probably add round 4 as well. Pollard, Schultz, Armstrong, Prescott, and Hitchens.

Trade up in the second much more likely than the first.

I would rather trade out of the first round if a team offered their next years first and trade up to the top of the second round and go into 2023 with two first round picks .I don't see much of a talent drop off from 24 to the top of the second anyway.
