Tyler vs OSU (both of them)

Everybody keeps talking about how strong he is. I'd like to see an example. He didn’t bench at the combine. I'm seeing him hug and toss, but that’s not strength and 9 times out of 10 it gets you a holding penalty.

Looks like the stiffest competition our first round pick faced last season came from these two teams. So how did he do?

I admit I haven't watched all of either of these games but the little of each I have seen makes me glad they're not wanting him to play tackle.

These two games account for 5 of his holding penalties, 3 against Ohio St and 2 against OK. St.

My biggest problem from the clips I've seen is he seems really "handsy". My hope is playing him at LG instead of LT and closing the space he needs to work in will help with this a lot. He can set a little more and not have to get back and on his toes to cover more ground against the pass rush and use more of his strength

I think some of you worry too much. Most of us wanted to draft an OG, but not this OG??? There is no pleasing this crowd.

He will be just fine and as good with martina nd Tyron teaching him. He's better today than Connor Williams ever was. Its not a sexy pick , but picking in the lower half of the board has ever been sexy!

His hands go wide way too often. Hopefully they can coach that out of him but if that's his comfort zone, it could be a problem in the NFL.

But I keep hearing he's nasty. The only nasty thing I've seen him do is what got him suspended. The 2 videos in this thread are the only full games I've watched. In them, he doesn't finish plays. He catches instead of punches.

Could you cite an example from the video?

There are several snaps in both videos you see him take his man several yards off the ball and of him stonewalling a rusher. Both of those take power and strength. Also several snaps that show that he over extends at times which caused him to be lose his position. He has a lot of technical work to get right but if he does (big IF) he could be really really good.

One big positive is he only gave up 2 sacks, last two years. Very low number of pressures too

Yeah, I think we're kind of penalty-shy, but don't take into account that it's really a small percentage of his snaps. Sure, we want him to clean it up, but you've also got to look at the rest of those snaps where he did his job.

Not sure they keep flowing this around......it's only one play.

Agreed. But the poster I quoted said he was dominant against Cincinnati. Which is completely untrue, this is 1 example of several that disproves it. Just knew where to find that 1 cut up

I believe Tyler Smith was drafted more for his upside and athleticism than his current level of performance. My problem with this pick is taking this level of risk with a first round pick. I guess could work out fine. We'll see.

Smith is certainly a gifted athlete. But he’s also just as certainly raw and unready to just be a plug and play guy. We must hope he’s a quick study. Or be prepared for a learning curve.

Would someone please answer this guy???

That's why fighters keep their hands up. Can't block or counter a punch with your hands down by your waist. He got hit before he got his hands up.

So our coaching staff just needs to tell him to keep his hands close to his chest. It's an easy fix if the coaches are smart enough.

Here's my take.....it's all right in from of him, talent, coaching, mentorship. If he wanted bad enough, the sky's the limit. He's about as green as your dollar bill but lucky for him, he has great teammates to lean on.

It is when you consider the people he is tossing like ragdolls are 300 pound men.

He also has two future HOF line mates to learn from.

Not the worst scenario.

Overall I don't love the pick but the alternatives weren't great either. It was probably the best they could do....

But according to them, if Green and Zion were still there, they would have still taken Smith.

I don't at ALL buy that and it's quite convenient per usual Jerry spin.

If he really was ranked higher than those two there's serious flaws in how they grade players.

Maybe his upside is higher than those two but he certainly isn't the safer pick against either.

He has some of the worst hand placement ive ever seen. Theres reps hes grabbing the back of the de's helmet or jersey omg.
That's what his instincts are telling him to do.

Gonna take much work to break him out of that, no?

I'm concerned about when he has to think and play at the same time. Everyone is at least a tick faster at this level and he is gonna want to grab.

You can definately see the power and strength. At LG, it will hold the pocket and not get pushed back like 52 did last year. But you can also see his footwork is choppy, which leads to balance issues which leads to his arms being out of control, which leads to a lot of hugging (holding). If they can fix his footwork and work on hand placement, he has a real chance to be something. He is big, strong and agile. So they have a good base to work with. Now it's up to him and the coaches to get it right.
It will be up to our great oline coach to fix his flaws.
