What I wanted was a guy who could start immediately at LG and eventually take over LT.

So I won't be complaining.

Zion Johnson and Kenyon Green may have a less chance to be an outright bust, but they probably will never play LT in the NFL.

Smith just may.

So this guy fills two holes. What's not to like? He replaces Connor Williams and is the backup to Tyron Smith.

With a healthy Tyron.....
Smith - Smith - Farniok - Martin - Steele

With an injured Tyron.....
Smith - Farniok - Badiasz - Martin - Steele

Sorry but I don't want McGovern on the field at all.

“Position flex” is a Garrett holdover philosophy and it is vastly overrated. Vastly. Other than making it easier to decide on your active 46 and 53 man roster on paper— what has it actually yielded in terms of on field production?

And it definitely gives rookies too much to process early on. Parsons is the exception— not the rule— but I fear his success last year at mastering multiple positions will only embolden this FO to deploy a flawed strategy

Agreed. So tired of hearing that.

Farniok? LOL

You guys are hilarious. How about we let the kid do something before we anoint him. How do you think Farniok would have looked last year in his first year starting against the Bucs DT's or Cox?

I realize the blocking assignments and the physical talents can be different from guard to OT. But the proposed position flex isn’t from one side to the other, or to defensive tackle.

I would expect that the biggest challenge would be does the player have the physical traits to succeed at both. If he does, how hard can it actually be, mentally only, to go from guard to OT on the same side?

Can anyone shed some light on this question? I don’t see vast mental gymnastics moving from guard to OT on the same side. The kid also had a 30 wonderlick score. So he seems to have intelligence.

Funny how OL always have the best wonderlick scores.

FWIW— I have heard Nate Newton on the podcast talk about how changing positions along the OL is more difficult and nuanced than would appear at first.

Believe it was back when they moved McG to LG and were also talking about Collins potentially going back to LG from RT and Nate was basically saying they should just let the guy learn one position and keep him there… Personally I don’t know much about the intricacies of all that would be involved— but I respect Nate’s opinion as someone who knows what he’s talking about

Dude. Have you been paying attention. Jerry has been in love with position flex for years. Most teams are. Only time that was stifled was under Parcells

Garrett made it a priority and a main talking point during his 10 year tenure. Don’t recall JJ talking much about it prior to Garrett.

Understand here (trying to put this nicely) that Stephen really does not know what he is talking about. He is not a coach. He cannot evaluate talent. He is just talking and feeding his media craving addiction again. About three months from now we will start getting an idea of what Tyler has and what he can give the Cowboys this season. That info will not come from the mouth of a Jones but from coach's comments and results on the field.

I don’t think you can say Biadasz is not the favorite to be center but I’m high on Farniok
We didn’t get to see much of him but what we did see was impressive
I would not be shocked to see him be in the conversation at center or at the swing
He may not be either but I liked the little bit we did see of him and he’s someone I’m looking forward to seeing in camp

I think they took him because they think he can develop into a LT
I think it would be nuts to expect him to be the starting LG and be taking reps at LT
If you want him to start at LG he should be the entire camp learning to play guard, then next year you can give him reps at LT
He didn’t play a snap at guard in college though he obviously has the physical traits to play there he needs to learn the proper technique to play there

I don't think you want Tyler kicking over to LT any time soon. Maybe as he absorbs more coaching but if Tyron misses any games the 1st half of the season Tyler is probably a liability if they kick him out. keep him at guard as long as possible and hope his penalty issues are covered.

Hey you, how is the kid going to do something, as you say, if he never touches the field? We have plenty of gameday footage on both Badiasz and McGovern. Neither one has been very impressive, IMO. So, if we want to put our best five out there, then we need to find out who our best five are. Am I right?

McGovern has the same problem Williams had, not enough core strength. Badiasz is only good when blocking straight up the field. When he has to slide over and get across a defenders face he struggles. So I know these guys have limitations. I seen no such limitations from Farniok thus far. Farniok has good feet, good strength, he slides well, and he can get to the second level. You just haven't been paying attention.
