I get the feeling we end up with 2 kickers on the roster. Harjrullahu is the consistent short yardage/XP guy. Meanwhile Maher can take the longer kicks and kickoff duties.

Not sure if the Cowboys have the roster flexibility for that, but it might make sense? Instead of one quality kicker, keep two who do a couple things well but cant do everything?
Trend setting...... might as well carry just one QB too....because if he goes down....we are pretty much screwed anyway...

Really? They signed 3 players in the last 2 weeks and still have money for the swing tackle that they need and a receiver if needed.

rambo, I tend to fall more on your optimistic side of the fence, but the front office is why we can’t get over the hump (like I said I’m optimistic and do feel that with mcclay we are doing much better). Fans are frustrated with the way they approach FA. Yes we signed some guys, but most our own. They want some significant free agents to turn the tide and we had lots of money this year and you see the reports of how cheap jones has been in payroll. I don’t blame them (but beware of the trolls)

I heard that Garibay was so distraught over being cut he attempted suicide. He had a 38 revolver and he pointed it directly to his head.

He missed, of course.

In 29 games played for Dallas in 2018 & 2019, he converted 49 of 66 field goals, & 68 of 69 extra points. He also hit an impressive 63-yard field goal against the Egals in 2019. In two postseason games for Dallas, Maher made all five extra points & 1 of 2 field goals.

Zuerlein's clone?!

Kind of the opposite for us. Zuerlein was fabulous (his first year) inside the 50 and awful beyond 50. Maher made 50-plus-yarders look easy, but made kicks inside the 50 look impossible.

The extra points look more like what we're used to seeing from him.

I would have. He's a rookie, so give him a little more time to find himself. The preseason games don't count so it's not like we're looking for him to make a game-winning field goal to save our season.

There was still plenty of time to find another kicker without bringing back Maher, and the better options are likely on someone else's roster right now.
True. I thought the same thing. Guess the Cowboys had seen too many missed FGs from Garibay to keep him on any longer. Sometimes when you are given several weeks of opportunities simply to make FGs, you'd better make them if you want to remain a Dallas Cowboy. Garibay can't say he wasn't given a fair chance. He simply mentally did not come through.

I'm certainly not lamenting him getting cut. He didn't show that he deserved more time. I just didn't see a need to cut him until teams started reducing their rosters and cut their extra kicker. Maybe Maher will just be a placeholder until then.

I thought he stood on a crate with a noose and tried to kick the crate away but kept missing.

Understood.

Maybe the Cowboys rushed to get Maher before another team grabbed him? Pretty sure some teams' kickers are struggling to make FGs so far in training camp, not just the Cowboys.

It's possible that they figured they might as well at least upgrade to Maher and then see what happens. I can't necessarily blame them for that. My only concern is that they'll stop looking unless Maher is terrible. At least with Garibay, we knew they were going to eventually do something if he continued kicking like he was. With Maher, what's bad enough for them to sign someone else? Under 85 percent? More than one extra point miss? I just don't know.

I just read a quote from Maher that makes me feel slightly better. Can't seem to copy it, but he essentially said he "had a lot of difficult conversations with myself" since he was last with our team and worked on being more consistent and staying focused on the kicking process instead of being distracted by the "outside world." Of course, many players say similar things. We'll see if he proves it. He was 10-12 on extra points, so that's certainly more a focus/process issue than ability since we know he can make from 60-plus.

I actually thought Garibay would be a shoe in as our starter after we got him.

It's just a crapshoot. Garibay was a good prospect...statistically he was a good kicker in college. It's just too hard for this franchise to find a reliable kicker. Dan Bailey was the exception, not the norm

Odds are he'll make it with another team. I think it's pretty common for rookies needing time to adjust. Mevis had the same issues in Jax.

You know things are going good with the kicking situation when Maher is being brought back. It’s like throwing something away then going back to the trash to look for it again.

Trouble is that Dallas has had some success there with undrafted free agents, so as usual, the Joneses think that is the norm.

Don't know if any other team will give him a try right now based on how bad he has been ... unless they have an established starter and are just looking for a camp leg.
