Kinda long but needed to setup the question. Now I'm not blaming Dan, because I feel it's on the players mental focus .
But a radi0 hist on 105.3 fan pointed out after researching was that each year Dan was the main DC on a team
Seattle 2 years (legion of boom) 1 year Here the team was number 1 in penalties. What I find interesting is they won a superbowl in Seattle ranking #1 in penalties. Went to the superbowl and was 12-5 here. Which leads to this, his defenses are very aggressive which Could lead to more flags, ( haven't did the research on if the defense lead the way in penalties or offense)
Here's the question if the aggressive style is the major culprit, what would you choose. Have a less aggressive defense or continue being the aggressive defense and live with the flags?

it’s the oline penalties that really kill the team.

While I agree aggressiveness can lead to more penalties, It's not that simple to just make a choice between the two. You ideally want both if that is your style of play. You will give up some calls due to the trade off for being aggressive, but you need to look at each individual penalty to determine what the cause was. You can't just look at the total # of penalties and excuse it because you play an aggressive style of defense

I say keep being aggressive. I'd rather lose with aggressive play and knowing the guys are trying. We've lost for 20+ years with lackadaisical effort. So if I'm going to lose I'd rather lose with aggressive play than reactive players.

Keep going after them. That’s why we have more ints and turn overs than before.

The #1 most called NFL Penalty is Offensive Holding. #2 is Offensive False Starts. It’s a huge drop off after that. I don’t think Dan has anything to do with our frequent penalties in those categories, but the coincidence of Dan being around these high marks is interesting.

Yes, keep aggressive.
Sure there will be penalties. However, the more experience they get doing this, the penalties will or should decrease.

Its not the defensive penalties I am worried about.

If the unit becomes a dominant defense, I would choose aggressive and deal with the flags. Dominate defenses can overcome penalties by creating turnovers or stalling the other team's offensive drives enough to minimize number of scoring opportunities.

Have a roughing the passer flag on third down. 15 yards and first down. 1st and 10. Stuff the run on first down. 2nd and 9. Cover the hook pattern and put the receiver immediately on the ground. 3rd and 4. Pressure the quarterback to throw before he wants for an incompletion. Punt.

That's what dominant defenses do after incurring penalties. They do not let penalties beat them.

I can live with the aggressive def calls. I hate the false start, ineligible wr, illegal formation and holding calls on Offense.

To answer the question… yes, aggressive. I always like aggressive defense, even if it causes a few more penalties.

I promise you that the opposing offense would rather see a passive defense with no penalties, than an aggressive, in your face defense that gets some penalties.

The Raiders in their glory days were always one of, if not the most, penalized teams. Teams that play aggressive and with a nasty attitude will get penalized. The question is; does that paradigm work in today's NFL?

Great Post and Question.
It seems to me that the NFL is punishing teams for Physical play.
So maybe dial it back a little to a happy medium ?

No it does not, the NFL is really killing teams now for being aggressive.
Look at the bogus roughing the QB calls we got last game.
