It was a foolish gamble, based on the future, and without thought to winning now. It feels funny even calling it a trade, it was a salary dump.
I think it was more than that. What Cleveland did as soon as they got him was restructure his deal. He currently counts as 6m$ against their cap; Dallas could have done that. Additionally, after this year he’d only has 2 years left. It wouldn’t have been unprecedented to extended him to further lessen the cap hit — he’d still only be 28, so a deal that lasts into his early thirties sounds about right.
I think this was more about getting rid of the person than the paper. Jerry didn’t want him on the team anymore for whatever reason.
