CFZ It would be foolish to move Tyler Smith to Guard in 2023

I understand putting Tyron back there when he is healthy, and moving Tyler to LG for the balance of 2022. Thats our best line this season, and that gives us the best shot at a deep playoff run. However counting on Tyron past this season would be foolish. It would also be foolish to keep Tyler at G.

Ive heard some say Tyler's more suitable to play OG in the NFL. This is false, and a misunderstanding of him as a prospect. Smith's measurables and skill set scream OT. His length, knee bend and lateral agility and hip flexibility are all there to be a dominant pass protectors. Add to that his rare power and aggression and you have a player with the Trent Williams tool kit. Smith is an OG only of there is no other place to play him, or of he fails at OT. To me if you classify him as the later after this season, you need the exercise more patience.

His 2023 has been checkered, but also has shown alot of positives after coming into the NFL so raw and spending the offseason at OG. He has shown himself to be a self starter and has hooked up with the most renowed OL trainers out there in Duke Manyweather. With a full off season program at LT, I see him being a plus starter at LT in 2024. I think it will be time to move on from Tyron, and on to Tyler after 2022

Approved but, you are going to encounter some push back about the big guy being done.

He cant be counted on. Nothing much more to say. If a person thinks we can, they are drinking seriously strong kool aide

I’d disagree with this. Moving him to LG and allowing him to play in a phone booth maximizes his strengths and covers up his weaknesses.

His weakness arent athletic in nature. They are refinement. That can be improved with coaching and training, which he has shown he is dedicated too. He doesnt any any physical limitations and that anywhere close to below NFL LT thresholds. Moving him to OG permanently would be a huge waste

To me it all depends upon where coaches see him long-term. If he's the LT of the future, I'd say leave him there and let him continue his growth at the position. If Tyron returns, and they think his best position is G, by all means put him there. I just don't believe coaches see him as a G. Either way, they need to let him experience the growing pains wherever he ends up and leave him there.

100% agree. Considering he didn't practice at LT until week 1 and coming from a mid-major, Tyler has been amazing!!! He has future all-pro LT written all over him. Getting a LT on his rookie deal for 4 more years will really help us out cap-wise. LOVE Tyron, and I hope he helps us on a 22 title run, but the $ can be be better used on other spots next year. He might also snag us a mid-round draft pick

I like the idea of moving him to OG to finish the season out with Tyron at LT. Thats our best shot at a deep run this year. However after the season its time for a permanent change

The cowboys need cap space for next season and moving on from Tyron is an easy way to get some relief. Unless he’s going to agree to take less money I don’t see any chance the cowboys bring him back.

I’ve been a huge supporter of having Tyler smith play LG, but that was for this season. It’s a position that’s a lot easier to transition to and the guy came into the league with a very raw skill set. I’ve been very impressed with him at LT, but we have seen the obvious ups and downs from the rookie.

next year I just can’t imagine he gets moved inside with the promise he has showed at LT. I think the appeal of drafting him over others on the board was the idea that he could transition to T and not stay at G. This was the cowboys plan all along, it’s just been accelerated with the Tyron injury.

Tyron's difference between salary and dead cap would be about 5M. You'll need that much to get a swing OT.
Money isn't that big an issue.

If Tyron can't play this year or wants to retire so be it but no reason again to decide that right now.

Ware was a cap casualty more than anything. Tyron’s contract is a steal for a starting left tackle
If he can play it is. 13 starts over the last three years suggests otherwise though. You can sign a really strong G for the money you would save from cutting Tyron smith, and minimize the reliability factor due to injury.
