How is it Nolan Ryan never won a Cy Young award?

Ryan's career lasted a record-tying 27 seasons, and his fabled fastball never seemed to wane. When he retired, he had amassed 324 wins to go with all-time records for no-hitters (seven) and strikeouts (5,714).

He was never the best pitcher in any given season, not to mention his W/L wasn’t that great. He was a hard thrower that was dominant from time to time but consistency was an issue…..he walked a lot of batters too.

I have met him many times, very nice guy. I played with his son Reid in American Legion in the late 80’s. We played against each other in high school too but we were in different school districts.

Well thought out answer.

There are tiers of greatness. Ryan is in the 2nd tier of greatness.

When he was on the Astros, Mike Scott was generally the better pitcher.

But for length of career being able to throw no hitters and strike people out, in the modern era he truly had no peer.

You had to really dig deep in baseball history to find players that were that good that long. Pre steroids, anyway

He's top 5 in the longevity award, no doubt!!!!!!

Hersheiser, Valenzuela, Gooden, Stieb, Saberhagen, Jack Morris, Bob Welch, Blyleven, Carlton, Guidry, Viola, Tudor, Steward, Sutcliffe

There were a pile of top pitchers who had great years. Gooden had an ERA under 2 one year, too bad he messed up his career w/ nose candy.
