Well thought out answer.He was never the best pitcher in any given season, not to mention his W/L wasn’t that great. He was a hard thrower that was dominant from time to time but consistency was an issue…..he walked a lot of batters too.
I have met him many times, very nice guy. I played with his son Reid in American Legion in the late 80’s. We played against each other in high school too but we were in different school districts.
He's top 5 in the longevity award, no doubt!!!!!!But for length of career being able to throw no hitters and strike people out, in the modern era he truly had no peer.
You had to really dig deep in baseball history to find players that were that good that long. Pre steroids, anyway
