#1 Should Daron Payne be our number one target in free agency?
#2 Is he a true 1 technique or more of a 3 technique?
#3 Would we cut/trade DLaw to make cap room for Payne? DLaw is still a solid end, but is he worth his super star salary?
#4 Would Daron Payne help take our defense to the next level?

He played 87% of the snaps in 2022.

Pure 1techs generally play less than 60%.

He had 11-1/2 sacks in 2022. Has a pure 1tech every had that many sacks?

DLaw: In order to get him to take a pay cut (before the 2021 season) they guaranteed his contract for 3 years from that point forward.

Daron Payne: Yes, he would be the perfect DT for the Cowboys.

I will say this though: it is no coincidence that his best year came in a contract year. He has been accused (by Washington fans) of not always playing at 100% full effort. I’m not sure how true that is, but it gives me pause before giving him a huge free agency contract.

Yes
Yes lol. To me he can be both, just a beast.
No, we can do everything and keep Dlaw.
Yes

Then you have DLaw Armstrong and Williams at edge . If you could bring in Payne at DT then go out get another edge rounds 3-5 . Makings of a nice front . LB needs some draft attention unless Devin Harper along with Clark jump up . Jabril Cox total mystery possible bust if he doesn’t step up year three .

How much would we be willing/able to pay Daron Payne? What would it take to sign him? 20-25 million a year?

Payne is going to get BIG money, and who says Washington isn’t going to tag him?

They don’t have cap problems and they are just going to let him walk? Doubtful.

It would be tough to land this player even if we weren’t cheap in free agency.

Now….let’s say we drafted him and he was the same player he is, but the team had the same results…they would back up the truck to keep him here. It’s insane.

I’m hopeful for Dalvin Tomlinson, who they should have signed two years ago. He will get like 2/20, but even that’s too much for a non Dallas draftee.

You’re getting the next Carlos Watkins, or actually Carlos Watkins, and that’ll be that.

You clearly meant upcoming free agent paron dayne, the 2017 7th rounder who is about to turn the corner in his career that we'll sign for 1.5 mil. That's who Stephen is eyeing

Yes a boy named Suh had 10 sacks as a rookie. Kevin Williams had +11 sacks 2nd year in the NFL. Fletcher Cox, Chris Jones, Dan Hampton, Calais Campbell all had multiple 10 sack seasons playing a lot of 3 tech.

Finally the greatest DT of all time and Mr. Cowboy, Bob Lilly did it multiple times. Because of the flex defense some say he was not a ture 1 tech but go look at the videos.

If you are a great DT, the technique does not matter. This defense need DTs that can keep the OL off the linebakers, stop the run, and rush the passe with pressure up the middle.

Carlos Watkins actually played pretty darn good in the playoffs.
