It costs 19 million to franchise one.
Especially one that gets 11.5 sacks a year.
It shouldn’t cost that much for a DT. However, the Cowboys have been unable to draft and develop a good one.
1. Aaron Donald $31.6666
2. DeForest Buckner $21.0
3. Chris Jones $20.0
4. Jonathan Allen $18.0
5. Vita Vea $17.75

Yes Payne would be tremendous . No I would not cut # 90 at all . Look to rid the Schultz salary first , clean out the RB room , if it means you move on from LVE . Yes to Payne .
Let Schultz walk. Draft Drew Sanders. Let go of LVE. Sign Payne. Zeke takes a MASSIVE pay cut or he goes. Franchise Pollard. Draft Gibbs in the second.

#1 Should Daron Payne be our number one target in free agency?
#2 Is he a true 1 technique or more of a 3 technique?
#3 Would we cut/trade DLaw to make cap room for Payne? DLaw is still a solid end, but is he worth his super star salary?
#4 Would Daron Payne help take our defense to the next level?
Yes, Payne is the clear #1 target, he fixes the run game and also bring interior pass rush which this team sorely lacks. A lot of the discussions lately are who to keep, who to let walk in regards of creating enough cap space to land a player like Payne and perhaps a legitimate #2 WR. If you get Payne and resign our own in-house guys, we just need a corner. They could address that in the draft and load up on offensive players.

If you sign Payne you cannot pay Diggs next year

3 years from now you will be paying big money to these players

QB, Parsons, CD, Smith (LT)
You can pay either Payne or Diggs
Payne is a better player and will cost lest than Diggs

Think 17-20 million sounds about right.
I'm betting in free agency he would get multiple offers over 21 million. Aaron Donald's contract was signed last year. Buckner signed his in 2020 after a trade. Chris Jones signed his in 2020 also.

Perhaps, it will come down to the total guaranteed money.

#1 I don't think Payne is going to be available. Washington could franchise him for a little under $19 million. I think they re-sign him or they franchise him. They are not going to let him go to the Cowboys. If he is available, are you willing to pay him in the area of $20 million?

#3 With a $26 million CAP number in 2023, I think they need to do something with DLaw. He is due $15 million in salary which they can convert to bonus. They can restructure him and save almost $10 million this year but his CAP next year would be $21 million. Then he would have $8 million in dead money in his voided contract year. That's not awful. If they trade him they save $6 million on the CAP in 2023. If someone offered me a 1st round pick for him, I would take it. I might even take a 2nd. But I would not trade him for a 4th or 5th. I would restructure and keep him.

#4. I think the answer is he would help. But I the question is, will his contract hurt us somewhere else? How much better would Payne make the defense than if the Cowboys signed Hankins and Tomlinson for around $11 million or so?

Agree with most of your points I would no way “ franchise “ a RB coming off a broken leg . Jeff Wilson a FA in Miami much better cap hit couple him with a Malik Davis and see if Zack Evans is available round 3 or 4.

or if Pollards out that Vaun kid form the big 12 got some of the same skillset at TP.

so if TP leaves we get 3rd round comp pick get RB in that area of eh draft with simar skillset..add Davis and a FA at vert min.

Daron Payne represents exactly what our defense has been missing for far too long. A guy who can disrupt the middle of the line, especially in the run game.

I will say this though: it is no coincidence that his best year came in a contract year. He has been accused (by Washington fans) of not always playing at 100% full effort. I’m not sure how true that is, but it gives me pause before giving him a huge free agency contract.
You can almost make that argument for all NFL players in a contract year. Look at LVE in 2021 vs 2022. Even early in 2022.

He looked pretty so-so until mid season and suddenly he's flying around, filling gspd, breaking up the occasional pass. Looked middlin good.

I’d absolutely cut DLaw to make room for Payne. Resign Fowler, keep Armstrong, there’s Gholston, and Sam Williams…we’ve gotten all we’re gonna get out of the tank.
Payne would be like signing Laroi Glover

Anyone got an educated theory on what happened to Gallimore this year? He seemed to have something as a rookie.
guesswork .. he's been revealed to be a rotation type at best. Has the size and physical tools and i've always heard how he has a hard running motor
but i've always thought he is one that plays too high and he cannot get off blocks fast enuff..

and was he actually deactivated for a game or so this past year ?... Such that he felt he had to take to social media to clear up per injury vs "coaches decision ?

regardless i feel the club is only comfortable with Osa as their 3 tech DT of the currrent and future, ..and he is also one that strikes me as a rotation type than
solid difference maker in the interior

But it's so extremely hard to get those type difference makers - even in the first round of the NFL draft. For example i've yet to see any big impact from likes of
Niners Jevon Kinlaw (injury) ..or Bills Ed Oliver, .that at draft time.two 3 Techs that Cowboys reported so high on .

His sack to pressure ratio is pretty fluky. We need DT help badly, but I don't know if Payne would live up to a mega-deal.

He'll get paid like a sack-meister, but his career production, his career PFF grades, and his pressures this season all point to him being more like a 5-6 sack dude. If you hated the DLaw contract, you'll probably end up hating Payne too.

Dalvin Tomlinson isn't quite the pass rusher Payne is, but he will give you all the run stuffing for half the price.

I would let go of Diggs and Wilson for the privilege of having such a disruptive player like Payne in the middle of the DL.
