Howie: middle of NFL curve worse than taking risk and failing

The best gm in the nfl explains quite simply his philosophy on the matter. While dumb and dumber are on record stating the exact opposite. One guy has his job on the line while the other two have the most valuable franchise label to hold up to. Quite simply put - this is the difference between the two franchises

Jerry literally last week. “I like being in the middle”

You can’t make this stuff up. You guys can draft, sign, trade, do whatever y’all want. Fire x coach and hire y. None of that will matter until somebody that knows what they are doing is in charge.

The easiest way you could could really put yourself on the map is to get a legitimate QB.

Roseman has built a possible dynasty in Philly and they will own the division for several years.

If Jerry was smart he’d back off the next couple years and let the bad contracts fall off. By the time we can rebuild the Eagles will start slowing down.
People like you have been saying that for literally 20 + years. Remember dream team with Vick...Carson Wentz Yada yada Yada. History shows the Eagles probably don't even make the playoffs next year haha.

I'm positive I can probably go back exactly 1 year from today and find posters like if not you talking about how the Rams are running the NFC for years and Jerry should make us the Browns before it's too late.

The Eagles steal a wide reciever from another team and people are mesmerized by the Eagles. I'll bet right now they don't win the NFC East next season

I'd rather make the Super Bowl every 5 years and playoffs every few years than get knocked out in the first or second round of the playoffs every other year to every year...at least one gives you a SB appearance and maybe win from time to time. The other is guaranteed failure every year.

Eagles have never been this strong. Thank God they are tying their ship to Hurts because with an elite QB, that roster would dominate. If they give him a big deal in the off-season, I can’t see them being able to retain their talent for long. That being said, I still like them in the East next season. But injuries will play a big part in where we both finish next season.

And the only thing you’d see from my posts last off-season are predictions that have since come good.

The strategy of whoever is in the superbowl always sounds good. The key is to have 1-2 players at key positions that are abnormally good, and to have good depth around them. It is rare to land those 1-2 players and have the depth. Sometimes teams have the 1-2 players, and not the depth, sometimes they have the depth, but are missing the 1-2 abnormally good players.

There is no surefire strategy to get those 1-2 players and the depth. And even when you do, it depends on the year, the schedule, ref calls, injuries, amazing plays etc

The highest probability of accomplishing this is to be smart with the cap and draft well. Play the odds year after year.

The cowboys have been without a superbowl appearance for a long time, but would you rather play 16 hands with a 50 percent chance to win or 2-3 hands with a 61 percent chance to win

All of this nonsense becomes easier to understand when you realize that the Jones family cares about the brand that is the Cowboys. Winning football games is just a nice to have for this franchise.
I've hung out and drank with Todd Williams before. I'm not going to say he said that, but I'm not going to say he didn't. If you don't know who he is, he's the VP of football operations with the Cowboys.

How you know him?

Truth
But we are stuck.
The young fans can wait these guys out.
At least us old-timers got our 5 .

Touch early for the dynasty talk. They have like 8 free agents on d alone and have to pay hurts.

I had a poster on here in the last week or so, basically agreed that he wouldn't risk it all to have a SB and then a few bad seasons. I said I couldn't understand how you would rather contend for several years (playoff appearances that go nowhere) then have a SB and a couple of possibly bad seasons to follow. We've done this for 27 years and it blows my mind some people would rather be in the hunt then actually get to the SB.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion and I'll respect it. Jerry is content with these seasons because we are relevant enough to be talked about which is good for his business.
That's an unfair question. If you can just guarantee a SB followed by garbage for years, I think most people would take it. But a better question would be having a 20% chance to win every year for 5 years, or a 40% chance of winning one years followed by 5% chance of winning for the following 4 years. There is no guarantee that an 'all in' gets you anywhere near a SB run.

Probably better for business, particularly for the Cowboys.
Keeps the haters watching, and that's pretty much the *rest* of the fans.

Stevie Wonder can see through this charade. Jerry sells hope without any GM to follow through with actual business decisions. The empty hope gets the same suckers to fill his stadium, pay for his merchandise, and give him inflated TV revenue. All without any results to show for their hard earned dollars. Rinse and repeat each year.

But did they beat the 8-9 Bucs with 305 passing yards and 5 tdS

Exactly right
If you never take a chance you a unlikely to succeed
well, jerry took a chance. he invested in players in such a way to create hope. generate interest and made cowboys the most valuable sports franchise.

its a matter of what's important to you and thus what chances you are willing to take.

My sentiments exactly. I said that in a job interview when I moved across country. I got the job and I was told that they were impressed that I was willing to take risks.

Wait until Jalen Hurts needs to get paid a new contract next year. He will demand around $50 million/year. That, along with several other big contracts on the team, will pretty much destroy this dreamy Eagles franchise idea.

So much for kissing up to the enemy.
