4th Annual: What Player DON’T you want in R1

Let’s hear it. Tell us the player that the Cowboys have shown interest in that you absolutely dread taking in Round 1 and why.

Here’s mine…O’Cyrus Torrence

Heavy feet, waist bender, struggles moving laterally, and a marginal athlete. I have not liked the film I’ve seen on him (and there’s a lot of it).

I think we could do much better in later rounds than him.
Agree; although I think the media talk of him as a 1st rounder has faded.

DT. None of the DTs look like safe 1st round picks this year.

Players that I like but I'm hesitant about in the 1st round:
-Significantly undersized CBs and WRs.
- Bijan Robinson

Why Hyatt?

D. Jones at #58 ?
Hyatt is a one trick pony who I don't think will be a big time receiver in this league.

Not a fan of Jones in any round. His lateral movement skills leave a lot to be desired, and I think he will struggle with speed rushers big time. At 58, I'd rather look at Jaelyn Duncan.

There's not a lot of guys I hate, honestly. This looks like a very deep class and there are tons of good players.

Michael Mayer would be a dud as a 1st round pick. I don't see him as a meaningful upgrade over Schultz.

Kelee Ringo has some pretty iffy tape, and there are so many other monster athletes at CB this year. If we go with Ringo over say Forbes or Cam Smith, it's probably because we went looking for "prototypes" instead of football players.

Jordan Addison would have me nervous. His tape is awesome, but his size and speed are almost identical to Cole Beasley. That doesn't inspire confidence in the first round.

I couldn't hate a Bijan pick, because he is basically bust-proof and his worst case is putting up 5 years of monster production. But it would show that Jerry is looking for flash instead of winning football games. Bijan doesn't get us out of the divisional round.

Serious question, not a criticism:

What games should I review to see iffy tape on Ringo? I watch a couple of complete games and he looked really good but the media does not like him.

Watch the Ohio State game in the national semifinal. He did not have a great game against Marvin Harrison and Emeka Egbuka.

DT’s Bresee, Mazi Smith, and Siaki Ika. I just don’t think they are round 1 guys.

OG - Ocyrus Torrence. The more I looked at him, the more I realized he’s not my cup of tea. I’d take Schmitz 10 out of 10 times over Torrence.

WR - Rice. I just don’t think he’s a first round guy either.

Opposite of the OP question:

Player not rated as 1st rounder by most of the draft media but that I would consider at #26:

OC/OG Schmitz

Yep. Plus he got cooked by Jameson Williams last year.

Those were the two stoutest tests he faced in college, and he kinda failed both.

By one trick, do you mean speed?

I'm normally not in favor of the mega players (over 360) but D. Jones has better fluidity than any 360+ player that I remember.

His wingspan is extreme and he covers more ground in 1 step than other OTs. He looks good defending the outside edge. My question is with regards to inside counter moves.

He is a boom/bust type player.

I would consider him at #58 depending on the other options but it's probably not the safest pick.

Flozell played OG as a rookie. He was 6'8-1/2".

Good thread!

I would disagree on the 1st round RB.

Last year’s 26th overall pick (Jermaine Johnson III) signed a 4-year deal worth $13.08M (yearly avg. of $3.27M).

Let’s just say Bijan drops and you take him at #26 overall. You presumably get an elite productive talent for four years on a relatively paltry ($3.27M per season + whatever marginal yearly increase) deal. Comparatively, the cost to franchise an RB is $10M, and cost of the contract you would have to give to sign a free agent like Saquon Barkley will be much more than that rookie salary slot.

At the end of the rookie deal you can say peace out.

Yeah....the 4th overall pick is nearly 3 TIMES the value of the 26th pick.
Spending the 26th on a RB is not nearly as disastrous as burning a top 5 pick.

I think picking at 26, there aren't many players I would hate. Probably any corner/receiver under 180 pounds as they usually don't translate on the next level. I wouldn't love another edge rusher, due to us having bigger needs.

The track record for super sized players is not stellar.

Anyone remember Aaron Gibson? How about Daniel Faalele?

Flozell was never listed at 6’-8 1/2”either.

I felt like this about Mayer at first too. I was wrong.

Plus, as a first round pick, there's a 5th year option. So that rookie deal can last five years.

If he tries a hold out before then let him hold out. Don't cave. He can sit out a year and he's still bound by the contract. Caving to such a move is, well...Jerry.

Many good names already mentioned. But here is my curveball. Trade out of the first and early into the 2nd. Should get at least an additional 2nd and 4th. Perhaps better. 5 picks in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds sounds pretty good. Maybe use a couple to move up into the 2nd for someone falling. 4 picks in the 2nd and 3rd OR 5 picks in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds works for me.
