Why I stopped caring about Player Contracts

The Cowboys have proven that they can keep who they want to keep by restructuring deals, and extending contracts. Then, if a player stops playing to his contract, they have enough flexibility to cut him (see Zeke Elliott) and absorb the CAP hit. I used to keep a huge spread sheet tracking each player salary, and CAP hits by year. But the money has gotten crazy with the new TV contracts, so it doesn't really matter anymore. Is Jalen Hurts worth 2-1/2 times Peyton Manning when he joined Denver in 2013? Just 10 years ago? Of course not. But it doesn't matter.

The Cowboys pay a staff of accountants to strategize on CAP management. So, since the money is ridiculous, and since the Cowboys can keep whomever they want to keep, why do fans need to care at all? Of course Dak isn't worth $40M/ year. But Diggs isn't worth $20M/year either. It's not my money. And the salaries are ridiculous. I've stopped caring. It's all click bait to me, and I'm not going to bite.
 
Well it matters much more than you are suggesting. Imagine not having zekes contract on the books last year and being able to use that money on other players. That’s just one example.

You used to keep huge spreadsheets tracking each player's salary and cap hit?

Paying these guys top teir money for second rate performance is what's caused these outrageous salaries at the QB position. To make matters worse yes it does affect the team. They have to spend even more money on their second teir QB to surround him by the absolute best players to make him even function.

And you're right about the Hurts contract - he isn't worth that much money, but at least he reached a super bowl before getting the deal. What was on Dak's resume before he got paid? Regular season stats?
 
Just so we are clear, the Cowboys basically ignore free agency every year because of their salary situation. That's how they are able to manage overpaying their people. As a result, Dallas will be counting on draft picks and vet min guys to fill out their regular rotation of players.

It matters.
 
Contracts should be scaled by the union like rookie deals are. A player who has 5 years service and has met certain markers (playing time, yards, tackles, etc.) should have a standard pay across the league, for example. Maybe the player can make a little more by signing with his current team but a Deshaun Watson type deal should not have been allowed by the union.

Which other player? This is not yahoo fantasy football. Players that are worth it often get tagged and resigned. Older, ineffective, over their prime or often injured players make it to the FA. Or you have to trade for one.

This if we had cap we can build and sign players we want is nothing but a myth

Every single year there are a bunch of players that leave as free agents and are expected to start for other teams. The Eagles alone lost five in part because they couldn't afford to re-sign them: Hargraves, CJGJ, Seumalo, Sanders and Dillard. League wide there are many players I would call potential impact players for us that leave their previous team via free agency or trade that could make us much better. I'm not stating we should be singing any or all of them, but the idea that only older, ineffective and past their prime players make it to free agency is off base IMO. This year I think had a little less than usual. It doesn't have to be an Aaron Donald to make your team better and be a difference maker

What was “on Dak’s resume” is that he was an NFL QB on a winning team.

You might want to take a look at the QB market.

Again, which one of those are difference makers. You just listed a bunch of jags or players on downside of their career. You either get a JAG or you over pay which might have been the reason their team let them go in the first place.

You can't build a roster via FA. You fill a gap here. Gap there. Fill the roster if you missed in draft. It cost too much if you try to sign too many high price FAs which puts you in a tough position.

I just said this yesterday. Everyone keeps talking about you don’t pay this guy or don’t pay this guy….when these contracts don’t mean a thing. You can get from under the them. So I really don’t want to hear the excuses some fans like to make when it comes to salary and the whole “piece of the pie” analogy.

Sign guys and worry about the consequences later.

That’s one thing I’ll say about Philly. They hand out dumb contracts all the time and don’t apologize for it.

What are you talking about. That's 5 starters leaving one team! Starters aren't JAGs. Sticking with just the Eagles two of their best players in this years playoff run were signed as free agents. Hargrave and Reddick were absolutely huge for them. You don't think either of them would have helped Dallas and you think they were past their prime when they both basically played at an All Pro level? And Bradberry was also a great player for them last year. Bradberry was 28 when they signed him. Hargrave was 27 when they signed him Reddick was 27 when they signed him.

No one is saying do more than fill gaps with free agents or t build an entire roster that way. I'm not sure what you are reading.
