It's nothing more than the power structure. It's like any job. Your boss knows better than you regardless of whether or not you're right. On occasion, John Elway called his own plays. I'm sure if Jow Burrow called his own plays, they's still be a good team.

Coaches don't always know better because they are coaches. When does Belichick figure out the better QB is on the bench if Bledsoe doesn't get injured? Same with Dick Vermeil with Kurt Warner. And these are some of the best coaches in history.
dude. lay off your trips in the wayback machine. it is a completely different league now with technology accelerating. You literally now have coaches with eyes on every aspect of a play real time from multiple angles. People on the field have no way to process that better. You are talking instinct vs. reality.

Wake up to reality.

John Elway called his own plays...sometimes....and that was back in the 80s, that was half way point of NFL history.... and you are sure Joe Burrow called his own plays they would be a good team. they went to a superbowl and AFC championship game losing to Mahomes!!!!!. coaches always work with the QB, are talking during the game and adjusting. and what does Brady on the bench having to do with play calling? same with Dick Vermil. neither of those QBs called their own plays all the time....that's recognizing talent, vs. play calling. two totally separate subjects.

come on dude, really what are you smoking and pass it along my friend. share... :)

Seven pages for something that is completely ridiculous. The OP was being facetious to begin with. We are already limited in what we do because of Dak. The best he ever played was in 2016 when we kept it super simple. Having him call plays would be a disaster and everyone knows it.

Asking Dak to call his own plays would be like asking the pilots who dropped the first atomic bombs to crunch the numbers on the math involved in making the bomb. It simply would not work.

I don't even know what you're trying to say here. You're acting as if calling plays is some kind of art. It is not. Not even close. It's not a complicated thing. You get a feel for the game and you call plays. Lets not turn tic tac toe into something it isn't. Calling plays is very easy for a good QB.

All I am saying is a good QB can have just as much success calling his own plays and any coach. That's what I am saying. It has been done in the past. You're not going to tell me Jason Garrett is a better play caller than Tony Romo. Why? Because he's Jason Garrett? No, it's a power structure.

I'm not saying the QB should have all of the control, but the coaches shouldn't either. Do what works best.

I disagree. it depends on the QB and the case. its been proven and changed over time as in years past, QBs were like OCs on the field and called plays. talked to their coaches on the sideline between series and adjusted. with advent of technology things changed. coaches call plays, it started as early as the 80s, where a coach like Walsh would script plays in advance and QB would just run it. that way he got a feel for the other team's defense and subsequently he adjusted.

Jason garrett sucked. you used a very specific example. and we don't know if Romo would necessarily be better. you just used a single example to make a general conclusion. you want to tell me Bill Walsh was not a good Play caller? so I can use a single example to draw a general conclusion that Coaches are better than QBs in play calling.

and I think the control is split, you are two black and white on this. they work together during the week. they work together on game day. most plays are called from OCs and Headcoaches as they probably will have a better view of what the defense is doing as not all QBs are elite with same ability to read a defense. they watch snap shots of defensive formations between series, they adjust together etc. Andy Reid calls his own plays and Mahomes executes and they work together to adjust and I am sure Mahomes has ability to make adjustments on a play by play basis depending on what the defense does in response.

so your generalization that all QBs are better in play calling than head coaches is wrong.

I totally agree that it depends on the QB.

That's the only way he's going to understand what his responsibility as a quarterback is. He seems content to run whatever play the OC calls, and when it fails he seems to assume that it's the failure of the OC.
By making him call his own plays he could actually improve.
Yep, have the guy who can’t even do his job properly take on even more responsibility

That’s the way to go

how far up your rear end do you reach for this stuff

https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/ask/what-team-had-the-best-blitzing-percentage-in-2022
https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2022/opp.htm
https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2022/opp.htm

https://www.pff.com/news/pro-blitz-tendencies-on-passing-plays-in-the-nfl

Bills who were #2 defense, topped the league on 3rd down blitzes with about 50%
chiefs who won the superbowl at about 48.7%
niners at about 45%

Pittsburgh, the #10 defense blitzed on average 42% of the time regardless of the down
Chicago bears, one of the worst defenses were towards the bottom 3rd of the league in 3rd down blitzes at about 40%

you just make stuff up as you go along, without even checking if the bullshiet you are saying is even close to any truth....you are totally clueless about football.

in essence you lie to justify your opinions. you are clueless

That has absolutely nothing to do with what I stated.

https://www.sharpfootballanalysis.c...-blitzes-mahomes-brady-prescott-jackson-2021/

Perhaps what’s more interesting are the star quarterbacks who aren’t getting this type of treatment, notably Dak Prescott and Lamar Jackson. Prescott leads the league in blitz rate (36.1%) and Jackson is not far behind at fourth (32.3%).

Jackson has played two of the league’s least blitz-heavy defenses but the defenses that like to bring pressure made sure to really bring it against the quarterback.

Overall, Prescott is 11th in EPA per dropback against the blitz (0.17). That rate is just a bit below his overall EPA per dropback (0.22), which ranks third. Prescott is beating the blitz this season and allowing plays to develop down the field. Through six weeks, Prescot has 12 completions of 20 or more yards against the blitz, which is second to only Derek Carr (15). Eight of Prescott’s 16 passing touchdowns this season have come on completions of 20 or more yards against the blitz. Those eight touchdowns match the combined number for Prescott from 2018-2020.

21% of Prescott’s attempts against the blitz have traveled at least 20 air yards, the second-highest rate in the league. That’s almost exclusively where his deep shots are coming. Against four or fewer pass rushers, only 5.9% of Prescott’s attempts have traveled 20 or more yards past the line of scrimmage, the lowest rate in the league.

This is clearly indicative of the fact that Dak was getting plenty of time. This also shows checkdown Charlie doesn't threaten anybody against zone defenses. Dak is a checkdown Charlie and won't threaten defenses if the RG isn't forcing defenses to respect the ground game. SO when this happened after Denver, the following no longer held true:

The answer for defenses isn’t as simple as to stop blitzing Prescott because he’s killing defenses in a different way when the blitz doesn’t come. On those throws with four or fewer pass rushers, Prescott is completing a league-high 81.5% of his passes. The next highest rate is 73.0%. Those aren’t just empty short completions, either. Prescott’s 8.75 yards per attempt on those throws ranks fourth. (Lamar Jackson’s 9.02 yards per attempt rank third.)

Although this doesn't include yards after catch, meaning they very well are more often than not short completions by design that led to those gains.

Only on Cowboyszone do the Cowboys win in spite of the Qb, in spite of the coach, and in spite of the GM. How does that happen lol.

Know and I’ll tell you why. Everybody Hass to get used to what the head coach wants to call. It’s about timing and rhythm. Not just call your own play here in there.

Win? What exactly?
Don’t look now but this is one of only 3 teams (out if 32, since you obviously have a tough time with numbers) that hasn’t won back to back playoff games and even reached a CCG (let alone win it) in 25 years

Yeah, we’ve been winning LOL

other teams and players are good, anything good here was luck....just look at the comments, a good QB comp% usually means the QB is good, well it does just not here it means that the steady flow of HOF WR Dak has had have been doing superman catches.....

I hate that we try to lump 27 years into every evaluation of the current team. There has been multiple different iterations of staffs and personnel evaluators here. Yes Jerry has been a constant, but for the past 8 or so years he’s been making less and less true football moves and the draft (especially the Manziel/Martin choice) is obvious evidence.

I know it’s been annoying that it’s been so long. But the Gailey days were not the Parcell days which weren’t the Garrett days. Coaches and staffs all failed for different reasons and you cannot lump it all together.

If you take the McCarthy era and analyze that, you see a genuine chance to make a run. The roster has gotten better annually and we just had back to back double digit win seasons with a step forward in the playoffs. We have a very good roster and could very well be the 1 seed this year. Why are people acting like these last few years haven’t been a real step forward? We’ve won more than 90% of the league, why act like that’s nothing at all?

If you’re a “if we have Jerry involved we won’t ever win” person then why follow the team while he’s alive?

It is annoying. Dak is 29 but he's the reason for 27 years of failure lol. So annoying.
