I agree. It may sound silly to some but this effected his approach and routine he practiced with all year and offseason. I have to imagine it's like a golfer being told they have to use a different set of clubs mid round....Yeah it's still the same game you're playing but every motion in your swing feels odd and you start overthinking.

Yeah yall make a good point. I will say it got in his head, but only because he had a routine and a rhythmic approach which was thrown completely out of whack by nfl offices. I understand not bringing him back, but his coach should have lobbied for his return if that was the case. I haven't heard Fossil or any coaches comment on it either.

That's my question. If this effected him why are they not taking this inconsideration to him coming back? To even compete for the job? They don't even want this guy to compete here. That's why I say I think its bigger than we all think when it comes to him. I don't know what he was doing at practice or the offseason but it leads me to believe he was already on a short leash. They already cut the guy once.

I hope it's not about optics or emotion. I would like to think we are better than that. Beat reporters should have dug into this more.

I agree. And I don't think it is but I also don't know lol. If it was this bad how did he even suit up agains the 49ers? They wanted to replace him before then and had tryouts but didn't do it.

Total guess here, but my theory is that it's more of a money issue than anything. Maher is 32 years old and yet to get a real NFL payday even by kicker standards. He has by far the best year of his career, and has regular season numbers that are pro bowl worthy so he expects to finally cash in, but because of the Tampa game teams are likely offering 'prove it' type of deals that come with minimal guaranteed money.

IMO that would explain the neutral quotes we've seen from Fossil, and the Cowboys lack of action on a kicker so far as they basically take a wait and see approach, especially after missing out on a K in the draft.

I don't know if this is true or not, but Brouddas said there was an issue with the long snapper as well. To me there is a decent chance that Maher bounces back again like he has done in the past. If he doesn't he can always be cut like any other kicker. The bottom line is that anybody they get will likely not be as good as Maher was last year. They ae going to have to get real lucky to get a solid kicker.
The replacement snapper admitted when he signed that the league thought his snaps were too slow. That could screw up timing and give the defense a better chance to disrupt and block the kick.

I believe the Cowboys are making a huge mistake having gotten rid of Maher. Yes, he got the yips during the playoffs, but that is something mental that should and could be fixed during the offseason/summer. Does your kicking coach want to "coach up" your kicker...or does he want to get paid to do nothing but call plays? It will be hard to find another kicker with the experience and leg Maher has.

Releasing Maher because you fail to "coach up" and fix his mental issue reminds me of the major screw up the Cowboys coaches recently did with Connor Williams by playing him repeatedly at the wrong position, only to cut him and see him picked up immediately by another team while "coached up" at a new position which Connor Williams ended the season ranked as the 3rd best Center in the NFL for 2022. I see the lack of proper coaching more as a problem in Dallas.
Love your pic. As for Maher, I’ve never seen a kicker do that in my 50 years of watching games. He absolutely had no business doing that and I don’t plane the FO AT ALL for moving on. Just cannot take that risk again.

The only kicker on the roster right now is Tristan Vizcaino, he missed five extra points in 2021 as a Charger.

I don't recall Folk missing four consecutive extra points.
Sure, kickers miss field goals. But extra points? And then four in a row?
And didn't he miss the extra point against the Niners?
The last year he was here he hit 64% of FG
Almost all kickers miss some extra points now but not 4
That was a record
But the point is kickers do bounce back from bad years and I think it’s obvious what caused the issue with Mayer since it started right after nfl stopped allowing kickers to put a disk under the ball. He let that get in his head. But I’m not talking about giving him the job, just bringing him to camp and see if he can earn the job. As a whole last season he was fantastic

0-5% chance Vizcaino is your kicker.

McManus, Folk, Crosby, Maher will be the guy
I assume that Denver is signing Maher. I'm all for signing McManus if he's willing to sign a cheaper deal. Around 2 million instead of the 4 + million he was getting in Denver. I would be fine with bringing Folk back but he is older and we have to wait on him. Crosby who is also older is likely done imo.

The real problem was with the holder, moreso than the kicker. I'm sure the kicker was worried about where the ball would be put down, and that may have affected his concentration, but we know Anger said it really messed with his head regarding holding. I think all three guys, kicker, holder, and center were affected in that they all started pressing....I need to get this ball down perfectly without seeing my usual spot....I need to make this snap perfectly over the spot the holder has his hands so he can get it down right....I have to adjust if the ball is a little off and not just stare at the spot I'm expecting it.

It's no real excuse since the rule affected everyone in the NFL, but after a couple of missed extra points, it probably got into the heads of all three guys for Dallas.
