Cowboys DE Sam Williams Reveals Sack Goal: 'I Need 10!'

Dallas Cowboys second-year defensive end Sam Williams is coming off a productive rookie season that saw him show flashes of his talent.

Williams finished last season playing 15 games, totaling four sacks, 10 tackles for loss, and nine quarterback hits. But despite announcing himself to Cowboy Nation in a devastating way, headlined by his display vs. the Detroit Lions, the former second-round pick wants more next season.

"I need 10 sacks," Williams said via the Dallas Cowboys' official website. "Ten sacks will open up a lot of opportunities for me. Obviously, the team goal is to win a championship, but my personal goal and what I'm working towards is getting better with my hands, and I need 10 sacks."

10 sacks, 15 QB hits, 10 TFLs, 5 personal fouls, 2 ejections and 3 car accidents. Absolutely love this kid but he sure makes it interesting...

Why stop at 10? Why not 50?

I get why players have them, I guess, but volume goals are dumb.

You don't set goals, or ever have?
They may be dumb to someone else.
Ok I'm not a pro athlete, but I think they're pointless in general anyway.

Sack totals are dependent on a hundred factors. The skill of the guy getting the sacks is near the bottom. Plus, what happens when he gets to 10? Stop trying? The number is meaningless.

I get what he’s saying to an extent. 10 sacks are great but sacks get you paid. And I get it. That’s the goal. But I care more about how he plays against the run. It’s more to his position then sacks.

Hmmmm....see he's been talking to DLaw. It's almost precisely what Stephen told him to earn a 2nd contract offer. Research DLaw comments coming up to his second contract. He admitted he was told to get double-digit sacks two straight years and he'll get his contract.

But I see he needs to learn it is best to keep his personal goal close to the vest.........fans don't wanna hear it

Well, that's not exactly my point lol. I agree with what your saying, but my point is more that there's no behavior change tied to the 10 sacks - or any other volume-based goal - so there's really no point?

Habits and effort should be static, regardless of results.

It’s common sense though. You get 10 sacks more than one year you are getting paid.

I see what you’re saying. To me a prime example is Robert Quinn racking up all those sacks….Lawrence never does but he’s a much more complete player. 10 sacks is turning into the 1k rush yards by a running back…..it didn’t tell the whole story of how good they are.

Yes the goal is to do play all out, give the 100% all the time. And win games. But I see nothing wrong with saying I want to do this or that, then go beyond that.
It is not like he is giving some unrealistic number like 20. And he won't give up if he gets to 10. Then he may say, ok, next level, lets go for 15 depending how games are left.
But to each their own opinions.

If a goal can just change then there is no point in having the goal.

There's nothing wrong with it, it's just a futile exercise.
