Cowboys DE Sam Williams Reveals Sack Goal: 'I Need 10!'

Dallas Cowboys second-year defensive end Sam Williams is coming off a productive rookie season that saw him show flashes of his talent.

Williams finished last season playing 15 games, totaling four sacks, 10 tackles for loss, and nine quarterback hits. But despite announcing himself to Cowboy Nation in a devastating way, headlined by his display vs. the Detroit Lions, the former second-round pick wants more next season.

"I need 10 sacks," Williams said via the Dallas Cowboys' official website. "Ten sacks will open up a lot of opportunities for me. Obviously, the team goal is to win a championship, but my personal goal and what I'm working towards is getting better with my hands, and I need 10 sacks."

Why stop at 10? Why not 50?

I get why players have them, I guess, but volume goals are dumb.
You don't set goals, or ever have?
They may be dumb to someone else.
Well, that's not exactly my point lol. I agree with what your saying, but my point is more that there's no behavior change tied to the 10 sacks - or any other volume-based goal - so there's really no point?

Habits and effort should be static, regardless of results.
Emmitt literally wrote down these goals while he was still in college...

1. Lead NFL in rushing

2. NFL Rookie of the Year

3. Hall of Fame

4. NFL’s all-time leading rusher

5. Greatest running back ever!!!

The only one of those that matters is 5, really, because it sets behaviors.

Some players can manage personal goals and still put the team first, and some can't. Sure looks like they're increasingly rare...

I'm quite confident that Sam Williams is capable of getting 10 sacks. Of course, the reps needed to do so has to come from the play calls. ;)

Ok I'm not a pro athlete, but I think they're pointless in general anyway.

Sack totals are dependent on a hundred factors. The skill of the guy getting the sacks is near the bottom. Plus, what happens when he gets to 10? Stop trying? The number is meaningless.
Every single team in the NFL sets standards as well as goals for every one of their standards...that is responsible interaction for sports.

Standards and goals are very different.

Any goal other than "win every game" is pointless.

That's the right attitude for Sam Williams. Can't wait to see him make a big jump this second year. It's going to be exciting.

10 seems reasonable with playing time. Between Dlaw, Parson, Armstrong and Williams we have a lot of snaps needed.

We should rotate plenty, and try to keep everyone fresh for the big dance.

Yall can cry about anything. His skill set is nowhere near the bottom factor involved. Terrible take man.

To get a sack, there are several things more important than a rusher's skill.

Just lumping things together:

Playcall
QB recognition
OL recognition
WR separation
Offensive ideology

are all far and away more important than "did the DE beat the OT."

Sacks is an offense stat, more than anything.

Nah. Volume-based goals never matter.
No knowledge there...every single team after each game and at the conclusion of a season, does an after action evaluation to gain specific direction and why. Talk about something that isn't just unrealistic wishing based upon individual biased stereotype.

Idk what you're blathering about, but it's not goal setting like I'm talking about.

Straight to ignore..you were being led to what is actually done by all teams in the NFL and prefer to hang onto disrespect instead,
