Kid hit it big after that disastrous rookie season. Kudos to him for not letting the adversity blow his mental makeup and development!

His rookie season was definitely not disastrous. He came in and impressed the coaches big time and earned a place on the 53 man roster. Mentally and work ethic wise, he was everything that La’el Collins was not. Steele was exactly the type of guy you want in your locker room. (Reminds me a little of Bass this year).

Then, because Collins was an idiot, and because Tyron Smith got hurt, Steele had to play as a rookie, which was predictably difficult for him. (My guess is that this is where you got the term disastrous from).

However, up and down play by a rookie OT is not anything unsusual for even first round OT’s. Just look at the rookie seasons for most OT’s and you’ll see mistakes and growing pain’s much of the time. Both of the Giants first round picks at OT struggled as rookies. Andrew Thomas is now one of the best OT’s. The other guy’s second season is this year, so we will see on him, but I’d imagine he’ll be much better this year, as long as he isn’t facing Micah Parsons, who destroyed him last season.

But yeah, Steele has now developed into one of the better RT’s out there. Finding a guy like that as an UDFA is pure gold if you can do it.

undrafted, no training camp or preseaon in 2020 had to start on the fly in what shouldve been a year he wouldve sat on the bench all year

came in and did "ok" and ok for a tackle in those circumstances is great!

2021 he took a giant leap into starter material and 2022 before he went down was absolutely CRAZY!

I think Steele is a good player, without a doubt an above average starting RT. But is he top 6/7 in the NFL like this contract says? I would def argue that.

Look at the whole team, and specifically the o-line, if there’s 1 thing this front office is good at it is plugging holes with draft picks. You’re telling me they could find and develop Steele as an UDFA, but couldn’t find an above average starter in any other way? Seems a bit far fetched, especially with Richards already showing promise.

Steele has improved to be better than average, but never even sniffed a Pro Bowl. The kind of guy we usually let walk, take the comp pick, and move on.

Also seems a signal that they don't plan on Tyron lasting too long.

If the front office cut every player that the fan base wanted cut every year this team would be 0-17 every year. thank God we're not in charge. And make no mistake we want every player cut. I've been a cowboys fan for 34 years and as each year passes I continue to have less respect for the fan base. We like to talk crap about the front office and that's fine but compared to us they look like geniuses

They had all of camp to see how he has responded from the knee injury. By all accounts he came back from that injury like it never happened.

I don’t think it was by accident that they watched him all through camp before signing him to this deal. Dallas probably has the best medical/rehab guys in the business (and best medical facilities)… I’m pretty sure that they are very comfortable with how Steele came back from what was a routine ACL.

I'll be honest, I don't know what the going rate for an All Pro RT is, but I imagine there's very flexible language in the contract, and he'll get considerable less than All Pro salary if he doesn't perform at that level.

The crazy thing is, if they are right, he can hold out for more money.

I’m higher on Steele than most but he was bad his first year. I wouldn’t say “up and down” summed it up at all. A lot of this of course was because he was in his first year and wasnt ready, but his play on the field was bad Year 1

Just all OL in general, same for our DL, the big fellas get stale quick when on the bench but seem to improve when they get involved and reps are a daily occurrence.
Steele has shown the work ethic which sets a very strong example for this OLs depth overall.
This contract is a great thing.
