Requiring Lights Out Defensive Play Is Not A Formula For Success

We're 3-1.

The 1 is from the one game that the defense didn't play lights out.

The game last week showed what happens if the defense isn't dominate.

The defense/special teams have put the ball into the end zone more than the passing game has thus far.

This is not sustainable and if these red zone issues are not fixed we are going to lose more games that we should win.

It seems to take just as long for them to pitch the ball laterally for no game as it does for them to go down field. They still aren't great blocking or setting up screens. Red zone inefficiency has me concerned. Yes I would feel better if the offense could carry their own weight and much better if they would carry the defense.

A win is a win but I did not see anything different that would make me feel more confident about beating SF after coming off the AZ loss and seeing all of our warts get exposed. 2 TDs from the offense is usually not going to win against quality teams (and really 1 TD came in late garbage time).

Right now that seems to be the pace that they're on each week.

Offensive TDs:
Week 1 at NYG: 3
Week 2 vs. NYJ: 2
Week 3 at AZ: 1
Week 4 vs. NE: 2

^I do not think this is the formula for a "Super Bowl contender"

Hard to complain after a blowout win...but you ain't wrong. Another game with lots of turnovers from the defense. Think we had 17 points off turnovers. Take those off the board and maybe NE can stick with their game plan and this is a much uglier final. We get our first big test of the season next week. We'll see. Cautious optimism.

Next week will make all things clear if we can beat the 49ers in their stadium we will have made progress.

If all our demons rear their ugly heads next week and the defense can't stop the run while the offense continues to struggle in the red zone we will know exactly where we are in the NFL picture.

Blowing bad teams out and collecting stats is great but when push comes to shove this 49ers team is the one we are going to have to face eventually to do anything substantial in the postseason.

If we can't compete because we have not rectified our problems we will end up no better or worse than we have the last few years.

I do agree with most of what you said. Next week will be a good test, because I don't think the defense is going to be the reason we win, if we win. I am nervous about CMC, and we might only see 6 or 7 offensive possessions if SF dominates the time of possession. Offense will need some big plays and no redzone hiccups.

Its a unique ability that Dallas has. To be able to play "lights out" defense in a free for all offensive league. I wouldn't look at it as a negative but a positive. At any moment, any week, we can light up an opponent. Be happy we're good at something.

Definitely a team that is dominant defense dependent. Translated means if the dee ain't creating turnovers and even scoring themselves, then the offense looks entirely different.
Especially if they fall behind.

Red zone efficiency is a joke.

The title of this OP and its content is accurate if ya ask me.

But even with all that said - Bring on the Niners.

If we lose 60% of our OL, then our offense will likely struggle.

It is our strongest unit on the team and they need to play.
