Hate that I have to say it but after last night I am done defending dak...maybe last night was good for the long run for this team
Purdy looked calm, collected, and hit most of his targets. The complete opposite of Dak. I don't have the all 22 so I don't know what was happening downfield. Clearly our offense just isn't as good as the 49ers.

How many times have the Cowboys won when our defense wasn't getting turnovers, and our run game was shut down?

100%

Were on year 8 and more than 100 games (plus postseason games).

We know who Dak is.

There is no next level for him. This is who he is.

Dak is squarely somewhere between Kirk Cousins and Derek Carr tier QB, which is actually a bad place for a franchise. They are just good enough that you invest resources, time, and effort into building the franchise around them. The Raiders only just realized Carr wasn’t the guy that was going to lead them to the promise land.
Yeah, I don't hate the guy but we're wasting other talent staying with Dak.

MM is next. I'd give him 2 more years.

If he resigns Dak, then Jerry and Stephen so called optimism is nothing more than hot air.
Even if he doesn't re-sign him, he has to be here another year. Then we have to replace him.

As i have been saying since they traded for Lance, they already made the decision not to extend him. The fact they didn't do it this offseason, where it appears they didn't even try, should say it all.

They basically are putting it all on Dak to earn that contract and he has failed miserably so far.
That would be almost as dumb as re-signing Dak. Lance is not a pocket passer. He looked terrible in every game he's played, including preseason. Even garbage QBs look good in preseason.

Dak is here for another year. The contract Jerry gave Dak ensures this.

The real question will become is Lance a legitimate prospect ?

It’s like an NBA team that is constantly a 7-8 seed.

Not good enough to win a championship.

But plays well enough that it takes them out of the draft lottery and reduces their ability to get additional high end talent.
Yup, effectively.

Maybe, but he has a ton of potential.

That is why i am happy, I would hate to be in this situation with just Rush and Grier in the waiting.

Cut the cord, needed to start looking two years ago.
I mean its tough to argue against that. Even if you have confidence in Dak it seems like the Cowboys are trending towards the full picture just not working out. Keep Dak and you probably have to reshuffle the offense once again and probably the head coach.

With that said I think you still need to have a viable replacement, which could be Lance, but that's an unknown. You also have nearly 3/4 of the season left. This team could still get better, and you have to let it play out at least a few more weeks before the discussion is really had.
Imagine what players would think of the FO if they reshuffle once again for a mediocre player, while paying him a lot…. He’s affecting contracts…

Cowboys are not as bad as they showed last night. 49ers playing at home with all the hype came out on fire and Dallas (which had opportunities to get back in it) got mauled in the 2nd half. For all the cliff jumpers, I watched a Joe Montana 49ers team get destroyed by the giants in the 1986 Divisional round 49-3 (bad games do occur on the road to the best of them). However, offensively, in the 1st half, Steele was getting beat badly by Bosa which really affected the timing of the passing game. Dak then contributed by making several high overthrows (perhaps he was too pumped for the game). Later in the game, they had to abandon the run because of the score and Bosa was getting chipped/double teamed in the 2nd half, meaning less receivers in route which fed into the 49ers defense.

I agree with the NFL exec though, Dak is not at the elite level of Mahomes but is a good QB. Reminds me of several QB's that could play elite in some games but look pedestrian or couldn't carry the team in the bigger ones. I think Dallas should not extend Dak and look to move on if they want to take the next step, perhaps Jerry is thinking the same thing with the Lance trade.

Dak never should have gotten the contract he has now. Dak was never worth $40 million. Remember, in 2019 the Cowboys faced the Eagles for the division lead, and probably the division championship. Dak had an awful game throwing inaccurate passes missing open receivers. The Cowboys scored only 9 points and lost to the Eagles 17-9. The Eagles QB was Carson Wentz. To me, that game was a sign to Jerry, do not pay Dak a big contract. And back then we thought $35 million was a big contract. After Dak got hurt in 2020 missing 11 games or so, Jerry gave Dak $40 million, a no trade clause and a no franchise tag clause when he current contract expires. And, he allowed Dak to make the contract a 4 year deal basically screwing the Cowboys CAP situation.

When Dak is negotiating his new contract we all know he is going to want even more money. But Jerry has no choice but to sign him or let him go via free agency, but he cannot get any compensation for him, other than a 3rd round comp pick. Now, after this game, which is another reminder that Dak is not the guy to win big games, Jerry is behind the 8 ball, but he put himself there.

Agree, but that's also where a viable replacement comes into the equation as well. That's been the Dak issue from the start....He's not an elite QB, but he is better than roughly half the starters in the NFL. Given his cap hit even if you move on from the guy makes it incredibly difficult to find a replacement-level player via free agency and they will likely not draft high enough to get an elite talent from the draft.

There are other ways. Dak is going to play next season. In this time, trade our 2024 1st round pick for another team's 1st round pick in 2025. Then use both 1st round picks we have in 2025, more if need be, and trade up for a QB. I suggest trying to get the Bears 2025 first rounder. :) We might not even have to trade up.

The Cowboys have one of better cap situations in the NFL. What are you talking about.
Um, you do know that this Dak contract is going to cripple this team in the next few years, unless they extend him which would be a stupid move because we are never going to win anything with Dak as QB.
