A new running back for next season?

Any Zeke-like backs in the draft for next season. Or one that's a fit in Dallas system? Just don't think Pollard will be here next year. I wonder what direction Dallas will go next season?
 
We’ll definitely need a new RB next season, if not more than one because it’s very unlikely Pollard is back. The Cowboys may make him a reasonable offer and allow him to test free agency.

The names I keep hearing for the best RBs are TreVeyon Henderson (5'10" and 214 pounds) from Ohio State and Raheim Sanders (6'2" and 237 pounds) from Arkansas.

Yeah I think the days of drafting a RB in the first round are probably over, especially top 10.

I understand why to an extent but their value to a team is still very high.

Or 4th, 5th or 6th round. Drafting a RB in round one in today’s NFL is crazy. A team can have a really good running game with more than one back. The days of a “bell cow” runner with 25-30 carries are in the past. Having multiple backs who can serve different roles is a much better use of draft capital.

Put it this way. We drafted Zeke with the 4th pick in round one in 2016 and he had about 5 very productive seasons. We drafted Zack Martin with a mid first round pick in 2014 and he’s played 10 seasons with HOF credentials. Which pick was the better value?

Why not now...

Derrick Henry had 1538 rushing yards last season with a 4.4 average. Also had 398 receiving yards.

He has a 4.3 avg this season.

He is a free agent after the season.

Tenn drafted a RB in the 3rd this year and one in the 4th last year...
 
It's time to get a guy. And if Pollard leaves, it's REALLY time to get a guy.

You can get a Breece Hall, Jonathan Taylor level talent in the early second. That's as high as anyone needs to go.

The wheels started falling off for Henry midway through last season which was the first season in his career his YPC dropped as the season went on as opposed to going up. He is now splitting carries essentially for a reason. The tire’s aren’t bald by any means but you can get a new set of tires a lot cheaper.

Barry Sanders played 10 seasons and averaged over 1500 yards a season. Retired from boredom of losing every year... 1491 yards in his final year.

Earl Campbell played 8 seasons but really burned out after the first 6 years.

Bo Jackson played 4 partial seasons and suffered a freak injury. Possibly the greatest athlete ever. At least, in the conversation.

I'd draft any of those three any chance I get.

Bo Jackson in theory could beat Usain Bolt in the 40 yard dash if they faced each other in their primes. That's insane.
 
This is a pretty thin RB class. I think Henderson is really the only guy who can be a "feature" back. There are a couple bigger backs - Benson, Allen, Sanders - who are interesting as rotational/depth guys, especially if you're going to keep TP20. If you decide to move on, it's a bit of a different conversation. Someone like Shipley would be an interesting piece to go with, say, Dowdle.

I wouldn't take any of them before probably the 4th round.
 
Audric Estime from Notre Dame or Will Shipley from Clemson would be two players I would look at. Estime is a tank and Shipley is more of an all purpose back with excellent quickness.
 
If there's a really good RB that you love and fits exactly what you want, and if you have a late first round pick, I see nothing wrong with using a first round pick on a great RB like this year's Robinson or the previous year, Bryce Hall. It gives you 5 years of control with no franchising to run his legs off.....if you want a star RB. IF you just want a good one, wait. Most late first round picks have 2nd round grades anyway; it's all about having that extra year of control.
