Just rent one in FA. Our picks should be dedicated to OL, LB, WR, TE, or CB….or QB if you really want to shake things up

Or 4th, 5th or 6th round. Drafting a RB in round one in today’s NFL is crazy. A team can have a really good running game with more than one back. The days of a “bell cow” runner with 25-30 carries are in the past. Having multiple backs who can serve different roles is a much better use of draft capital.

Put it this way. We drafted Zeke with the 4th pick in round one in 2016 and he had about 5 very productive seasons. We drafted Zack Martin with a mid first round pick in 2014 and he’s played 10 seasons with HOF credentials. Which pick was the better value?
I agree with this. I would add that, since most teams are reluctant to draft a RB early, the good ones tend to remain available until the later rounds. I could live with one drafted in the 3rd round, but you're right. The team is probably fine waiting until the 4th, 5th, or 6th. We need a bruiser. I'd love to have another Calvin Hill or Robert Newhouse.

Yea, was a great year to draft a RB in the mid rounds and they blew it.
I don't get this logic, there was some top-end talent in Bijan and Gibbs but the middle of the pack is as pedestrian as most other classes. It wasn't better than 2022 and then there's a whole slew of mid-round prospects again this year.

One if the most important aspects of draft picks is value. Drafting a RB in the first round is usually a poor value choice because most RBs begin to decline after 5 years. We saw that with Zeke.

On the other hand, drafting a great OL (like Zack Martin) in the first round usually gives you at least decade of excellence. WRs, DL and LBs also typically have better value than a first round RB. And there are usually some really good backs available on Day 2 and 3.

I think off ball LB is getting similarly devalued to RB where most guys don’t have as long of careers before they start breaking down and teams have been looking to draft more mid round guys.

There’s also some value to a late round 1 RB if it’s a talent that can elevate your offense for the next 5-6 years then you can control their contract through their prime at low cost and get a player with talent you normally wouldn’t get at the end of R1. If you dump after their rookie contract + tag then you don’t have to deal with a bad contract for a big time weapon on offense.

Caveat being this is really only if you have a guy you think is a special talent at the end of R1.

The RB position has always been key to the Cowboys success. There is no coherent reason to not get a top tier one.

This.

I’d be more inclined to build the OL and stay cheap at RB.

Why not now...

Derrick Henry had 1538 rushing yards last season with a 4.4 average. Also had 398 receiving yards.

He has a 4.3 avg this season.

He is a free agent after the season.
I like your sense of humor.

Yeah I think the days of drafting a RB in the first round are probably over, especially top 10.

I understand why to an extent but their value to a team is still very high.
Really. Then why were there 2 taken in the last draft in the 1st? So, starting w/ the 24 draft then?

Unfortunately, he still has to stay in college for another season, but Damien Martinez from Oregon State is a stud. Would love to have him in Dallas.

Benson would be a good pick between 30 and 64.

But what about Fredbeard? was that a wasted pick?

Need a RB that has a nose for the end zone while in the red zone.
This team may not miss the contract money paid to zeke and they may not miss him between the 20s...but without a doubt they miss his ability to run in TDs in the Red zone.

Audric Estime has 18 touchdowns this year - he would be your guy.
