Dak's running may help for a bit, but it will end badly

Running quarterbacks are again a fad in the NFL.
But just like before, and just like the Ravens found out and the Eagles, and the Falcons with Vick, the NFL shied away from running quarterbacks because they eventually get hurt, and leave their team without a starter.
Dak was a running quarterback in college and his passing was bad. This is nothing new.
 
Completely different imo…those guys looked to run first almost and those guys made a lot of runs in between the tackles. Most of daks runs are to keep plays alive and many times he slides down or gets out of bounds.

Dak had become in love with being strictly a pocket passer, him threatening the defense 2-3 times a game on the potential that he could run is an element he needs. He’s also not a “running quarterback”. He’s shown he can drop back
 
Your QB scrambling is no longer a bonus - in today's NFL, it's a necessity.

The days of a Peyton Manning or Drew Bledsoe dominating while never escaping the pocket are over. The days of a "fortress" OL keeping the QB safe in the pocket are over.

The best QBs nowadays are generally the ones who can best use their legs to their advantage. Imagine telling Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen to stop scrambling.
 
its not the running ability - its the ability to be able to run vs not being allowed to be mobile.

He is much more comfortable when he can move around, he is a lot more error prone when he is confined to the pocket.

Let's face it we're doomed. :laugh:

I think Dak should use everything in his arsenal that makes him the best that he could be, because that gives us the best chance to win.
I will be rooting for the Cowboys to succeed, and last I checked Dak is part of that team. I guess rooting for the Cowboys instead of searching for ways that they will fail it's not something we do around here. Such a shame:(

Mobile QBs aren’t at fade, they’ve been around for years. :rolleyes: Most of the starting QBs in the league have mobility. Lamar Jackson and Justin Fields are about the only so called “running QBs.” They do most of their damage with their legs, but the rest of the QBs in the league are pass first QBs. Dual threat QBs are the rage, because they’re hard to defend. They can hurt you with their arm and legs. With teams loading up with pass rushers that have speed, a QB has to be able to extend plays with their legs.

Yes and No. I think everyone wants to make it black & white. Either mobile or not mobile. But both styles can work.

T-Lawrence, Tua, Goff, there are some QBs doing very well this year who I wouldn't call "mobile." Burrow is mobile, but not like an Allen.

Here's the key word -- pocket awareness and reading the defense. If you run because you see the defense, no problem. If you run because you can't read the defense, problem.

Or worst of all, you run because you get jittery in the pocket or even if because your Oline stinks, huge problem!

And regarding OP's original point about injuries. Yep, no matter why you do it, the more you do it, the more you risk ending your career early. Some big runners take it all the way to 40, but those are very few.

Many people think "using your legs" means 10 yard gains.

Maybe some times....but just feeling pressure and seeing open spots...use the legs...can do exactly what you said. Zero ground yards, but extended drives.

He is not a running QB. Daks running is moving in the pocket. He is scrambling, he has very few designed runs!

What!? Your acting like the dude is runn8ng like Lamar or Kyler etc. Will it end bad for all these QBs that do it like Hurts and Allen and Mahomes when they need to or just Dak!?

Tell that to Roger Staubach, John Elway, Fran Tarkenton, Michael Vick, Randall Cunningham, etc. Football is a collision sport and most go the way of Aikman with concussions and not leg injuries.

However, Joe Theismann could not run a lick but his career was ended with a broken leg in the pocket.

Staubach scrambled, but didn't run.
He tried that and ended up with a separated shoulder, and Landry was mad.
There's a difference between scrambling and using the quarterback as a running back.
