Here’s a very revealing stat: Since 2000 - the last 24 drafts - the Cowboys have only drafted 5 QBs. Here’s the list:
  • 2001- Quincy Carter round 2
  • 2007- Isiah Stanback- round 4 (never took a snap as a QB because he was converted to WR)
  • 2009- Stephen McGee, round 4 (part of the worst draft in team history)
  • 2016- Dak Prescott, round 4
  • 2020- Ben DiNucci- round 7
That’s it. Five QBs drafted in 24 drafts. We’ve drafted 1 QB in the last 8 drafts and that was 7th rounder Ben DiNucci. That’s just crazy.

Looking at the teams in the 21st century with the most success, they draft QBs often. Even if they already have a HOF QB in place. Look at the number of QBs these teams have drafted since 2000:
  • Patriots: 13 (they drafted 12 after getting the GOAT Tom Brady!)
  • Niners: 11 (They drafted Brock Purdy the year after drafting Trey Lance in round 1)
  • Broncos: 11
  • Ravens: 10 (they drafted Lamar Jackson when they already had SB MVP Joe Flacco)
  • Eagles: 10
  • Packers: 8 (they drafted Aaron Rodgers with the 24th pick 3 yrs before Favre left and drafted Jordan Love with the 26th pick when they had Rodgers!)
  • Chiefs: 7 (they moved up in the draft to get Mahomes in 2017 when they already had Alex Smith who had just taken them to the playoffs)
Every single one of those teams have won multiple conference championships and either won or played in multiple SBs since 2000. The Cowboys have drafted 5 QBs in the same time frame and have zero conference championship appearances. That’s not a coincidence. For whatever reason, Jerry has acted like “we’re set at QB“ without any interest in finding a diamond in the rough as so many other teams have.

It’s pretty clear that the better teams the last two decades know how important it is to draft a QB. Even if you already have a QB you like. There’s a fundamental truth at play here: You can’t find a diamond in the rough at QB if you don’t even try.
We have an Amateur playing GM.
It's the single largest handicap that's holding this team back.
Until Jerry relinquishes his position as GM, this team is gonna stay in perpetual mediocrity.
No NFCCG game appearance,
28 years and counting, folks.

And McCarthy is supposed to be a QB Whisperer with his QB camps.
If so, he could deliver massive value to the franchise in developing QBs on the cheap.
Instead, we're paying Dak zillions and Cooper Rush is our gameday backup.

You can't be one of the better teams when you are so horrifically mismanaged on the talent front. We have the best sales and marketing. Outside of that we are not a serious franchise about winning anything.
1000% correct.
Winning is not the number one priority here.

Yeah, I've seen this type of stat before involving our lack of QB drafting... I think is it telling that the other teams in our division will have each had multiple 1st round QB's they drafted play for them compared to us since at least the Romo days (when factoring in the 'skins will be drafting a 1sr round QB this year and assuming he will play for them this year)..

Great post and yet another reason why we can't win in the current Jones Cartel model.

They also are aggressive in free agency and in getting a coach who can build the proper coaching to support the new QB. Brock Purdy doesn't look anywhere near Brock Purdy if he was on the Raiders. Remember when Garoppolo looked like the next big deal? How did he look after he left the Patriots and 49ers?

Is there a reason you didn’t list Mike White?

I don’t waste picks on a QB if I have one. I’d rather use that pick to build my team.

Yeah as luck and chose what we want to emulate lol. Other teams also have a real GM. Other teams don’t waste second round picks. I can do down the list of what other teams don’t do.

To his credit, Jerry did try to move up and grab Paxton Lynch. Looking back, I'm sure we're all happy that didn't work out. That's when they decided to settle for Dak in the 4th round.

I feel like having Romo/Dak work out for us for several years will backfire on this franchise in the long run. It's going to provide them with this false narrative that they don't need to spend high to find a QB. I'm sure they believe in themselves enough to think they can find QBs just laying around in late rounds/UDFA.

Can you find a good QB later in the draft? Definitely. We've seen it. I'd say the odds are against you though. If you took the time to put together the data, I'm sure it'll tell you that most of the good QBs came in from the 1st round.

At least try churning the butter.

Late edit: It’s six QBs drafted not five. Missed Mike White in 2018. Thanks

I don't disagree with your premise, but I would like to point out that while the Broncos have drafted 11 QBs since 2000, not a single one was very good:
  • 2000 - Jarious Jackson
    • 7th Round, Pick 214
    • 22 career pass attempts in 4 years
  • 2004 - Matt Mauck
    • 7th Round, Pick 225
    • Lasted just 1 year and 27 pass attempts
  • 2004 - Bradlee Van Pelt
    • 7th Round, Pick 250
    • Lasted just 1 year and 11 pass attempts
  • 2006 - Jay Cutler
    • 1st Round, Pick 11
    • Made the playoffs once in his career, but that was with Chicago, going 1-1 in 2010
  • 2009 - Tom Brandstater
    • 6th Round, Pick 174
    • 1 year, 2 career pass attempts
  • 2010 - Tim Tebow
    • 1st Round, Pick 25
    • At least he won a playoff game for DENVER, but only lasted 3 years in the NFL
  • 2012 - Brock Osweiler
    • 2nd Round, Pick 57
    • Made the Playoffs once in his career, but for Houston, going 1-1 in 2016
  • 2015 - Trevor Siemian
    • 7th Round, Pick 250
    • Journeyman QB who was a starter for 2 years, but was middle of the road. Never reached playoffs.
  • 2016 - Paxton Lynch
    • 1st Round, Pick 26
    • Infamously only lasted 2 years in the NFL, going 1-3 as a starter, with 4 TDs and 4 Ints
  • 2017 - Chad Kelly
    • 7th Round, Pick 253
    • 1 career attempt, for -1 yards
  • 2019 - Drew Lock
    • 2nd Round, Pick 44
    • Went 8-13 in three years in Denver, and 1-1 in his lone year in Seattle

All 11 QB picks from 2000-Today, including three 1st Round picks and two 2nd Round picks, which lead to a grand total of 1 playoff win for Denver.

The reason Denver was successful from 2012-2015 is because they brought in an old, and pretty beat up, Peyton Manning.

They also tried the "bring in a Vet QB" with Flacco, Bridgewater and Wilson, and have ZERO playoff appearances to show for it.

Again, not saying your premise is wrong, but I will say you probably should NOT use the Denver Broncos as a beacon for good QB drafting.

And I think you know that since you didn't mention any of the QBs they drafted.

That's all.

So just to get this straight: We draft one #1 pick QB and go to three superbowls. Then for 30 years nothing and we aren't even getting close? I wonder what logic drives Jerry to feel good with what he's doing ever since the new millenium.

Either way, they did two things the Cowboys don't even have in their strategy book anymore.

Drafting a QB is not the only way to acquire one. I haven't researched how many the Cowboys have acquired through free agency but it's something to consider when you are bashing the Cowboys' drafting habits.
Is Romo being considered here? Trey Lance?

Laughable. This organization is so scared of drafting a bust at QB that they don't even try.

Dak is a good QB but he's not the answer.
