He could help himself out by working on his game in the offseason and then stepping up to play well during the preseason. And if he gets some regular season play and balls out there might be able to get traded for a higher draft pick. If the Cowboys decide to hang onto him for another season and trade him next season because they're looking to get Dak's replacement fresh out of the draft.

Not even that. If you trade him you are going to be lucky if someone offers you a 5th or a 6th. At this point, he will be a player whose sole appeal is good college tape 5 years ago (he took the last year of college off) but has done nothing in the NFL since then. There is minimal value there so I would expect a 6th rounder is being generous.

Keep Trey Lance and see what we can get out of him and see what he has to find out whether or not he can realistically be the type of starter to get the Cowboys to the NFC Championship game and beyond? And keep him as backup in case Dak stinks it up in the regular season.

Or trade him for picks and use these picks to help rebuild, which would include using those draft picks to select a QB in the 2025 draft in the case Dak isn't the Cowboys QB beyond the 2024 season?

Since being traded for a single fourth round draft choice he’s done exactly nothing. How can he possibly be worth “picks” now?

This is just another personnel situation the Cowboys mishandled. I think developing him and then deciding to trade him away would be smart. But trading for him, never and never letting him take the field has not increased his trade value at all. In fact, he is another year from the draft so my guess is they will get offered less than what they gave up for him.

The should have given him some playing time in blowout games, even if they had kept him active for some games. Let him get some experience. If he has one game where he looked good, he trade value would increase significantly.

If they re-sign Dak, there is no point in keep Fields. I think they will eventually trade him away for less than what they got, or they will lose him to free agency and get nothing. This is how the Jones Boys roll.

Right now Carson Wentz is a more experienced and capable NFL quarterback than Trey Lance. He can be signed for zero compensation to any team because he’s a free agent. In addition he’ll work for the minimum pay allowed by the CBA which is about 20% of what Lance is going to be paid this season. That’s what Lance is worth right now. He’s a less attractive acquisition than Carson Wentz. Digest that. No team is going to offer anything for Trey Lance, ever.

carson wentz is a known entity. and a terribly known entity who has still fetched picks. the league often values untapped potential. no clue what trey's value is, and it may be less than wentz, but not because of your reasoning.

They had opportunities but no one made them a good offer. They certainly weren’t going to make the trade until they explored all options. That’s when Jerry decided to call. No way does SF trade him for a 4th if they thought they could better.

teams make trades all the time because of circumstances. they were trying to do right by him. we've seen marginal qbs get traded for more than they're worth all the time. maybe they would have, maybe they wouldn't have but jerry closed the deal at the moment. all good.

I doubt they trade him. Having a young qb trained by McCarthy makes sense. It will be interesting and fun to see Lance as the number 2 qb on such a good team.
