I partially blame the 49ers staff but I also blame the NFL. Why would you change the rules for the playoffs. I've been saying for years it's beyond dumb that whoever wins the coin flip can go score a TD and the game is over, yet that is still the rule in regular season. They should just make it the same for regular season and playoffs that both teams have a chance to possess the ball.

So I guess the 49ers took the ball first because they thought they could go score a TD and the game was over, LOL.

It does make it better to defer since you'll be able to see what the other team did and plan your strategy accordingly. Of course, the 49ers knew by taking the field goal that the Chiefs would be getting the ball anyway.

They need to just use college OT rules already.

The current OT ruleset is way too convoluted, and quite frankly stupid in a regular season context.

Not sure how them not knowing the OT rules affected them here. It's not like they scored a TD and thought they won, they settled for the FG
They should have kicked to the Chiefs and got the ball second. May or may not have changed the outcome though.

The ref literally explained the rules thoroughly during the OT coin toss.

It has more to do with them winning the coin toss and taking the ball. Typically you would want to kick the ball if both teams get possession to know what you're up against. For example if the other team scored an opening TD to overtime then you're playing with 4 downs from the get go.

Stupidity to not know the rules.

But rules or not, you couldn't punch it in and you couldn't stop them from punching it in. They were going to lose regardless

The OT rules are different in the regular season because OT could go on and on and it’s a 17 game season. OT is only 10 minutes during the regular season and if the first team to possess the ball scores a TD the game is over. They want teams to have more of a chance in OT during the playoffs so they have different rules. I’m totally fine with it because it’s do or die in the playoffs.

That's not what happened.

Kyle Shanahan knew the rules and explained his line of thinking postgame.

Had both teams scored a FG or a TD, the 49ers would've then gotten the ball in a sudden-death situation.

I just don't think it's going to hurt anything if a team scores a TD in regular season to then have to go on defense vs. the game being over. Is one more possession going to cause like 10 injuries? No it isn't, it's just stupid it should be fair in the regular season like it is in the post season. Any time you let a flip of a coin decide a QB never gets a chance that is unfair.

And they barely changed the rules for the playoffs. It's used to be sudden death in the playoffs as well. One time Mahomes vs. Brady a coin flip kept Mahomes from getting a chance in OT because Brady scored a TD.

They need to play a full 10 or 15 minute OT. They shown they do not care about player safety as much as they claim.

This sudden death type thing is crap. If a team scores a TD, give the other team that same chance.

The new playoff OT rules were a stupid kneejerk reaction to people whining about how Buffalo lost to KC.

If you don't want the coin toss to matter, then there must be an inherent "pro" and "con" to getting the ball first AND kicking off first.

The new rule all but eliminates any realistic "pro" in receiving first, which is why SF is getting clowned right now for that decision.

Exactly, fans complain about the league favoring the offense and then support rules like both teams should get the ball in OT. Sudden death should've never changed
