49ers players admit they didn't know the Overtime rules

I just don't think it's going to hurt anything if a team scores a TD in regular season to then have to go on defense vs. the game being over. Is one more possession going to cause like 10 injuries? No it isn't, it's just stupid it should be fair in the regular season like it is in the post season. Any time you let a flip of a coin decide a QB never gets a chance that is unfair.
The NFL is all about trying to reduce wear and tear on players and injuries. The longer OT lasts the more chance of injury, especially to key players and it makes it more difficult for teams to recover the following week. This is why they shortened OT to 10 minutes. It’s a long season.

No they're not, if they really cared about players they wouldn't have added a 17th game which is way more wear and tear than playing another possess in overtime which rarely ever happens. Obviously the 17th game meant more money so I guess in that case the money trumped the players health but in overtime let's make it unfair, makes absolutely no sense.

Lol you really believe that? If that was true, the sudden death OT would've never changed

Lol I can't believe he actually said that

Too many people whined and cried that it's not fair if one team scores a TD to end the game. Just be happy it's not flag football yet.

I was surprised the 49ers took the ball first under those rules. In College the best strategy is always to take the ball second so you know exactly what you need to do to win or survive. Same strategy would apply here.

I understood his strategy, the only thing he should've done differently is if you plan on taking the ball first, you have to get a TD no FG

It does make it better to defer since you'll be able to see what the other team did and plan your strategy accordingly. Of course, the 49ers knew by taking the field goal that the Chiefs would be getting the ball anyway.
I think you have to defer. If they kick a FG you can match but if they score a TD you can get 4 tries every time since it’s a do or die drive

Well, they did seem to be trying to do that.
They did but you can’t go on 4th and risk not making it and giving them a chance to win on a FG. I would defer because on the first two possessions you have the advantage of knowing what you need. The only advantage of taking it is the 3rd possession you can win with a FG

The ref literally explained the rules thoroughly during the OT coin toss.
Exactly.

What a lame excuse the 49ers are making for the overtime loss. They knew the new overtime rules. The ref explained them clearly and even asked if anyone had any questions.

They need to just use college OT rules already.

The current OT ruleset is way too convoluted, and quite frankly stupid in a regular season context.
College OT is absolutely terrible. You start at the 25 for one. Then if it's tied after 2 OT's, you have a 2pt conversion contest until a winner is decided. This is the equivalent of soccer deciding a game on penalty kicks. NFL after all this time finally has the perfect OT.

Exactly, fans complain about the league favoring the offense and then support rules like both teams should get the ball in OT. Sudden death should've never changed
Sudden death was always dumb. Glad they changed it over time to where we are now. Each team needs to touch the ball once. You don't see MLB or NBA having sudden death extra time. Coin tosses should not have a huge impact on the winners of a game.

NFL's overtime in the playoffs is now perfect.

Right. If you get in field goal range knowing that's all you need to win, then there's no reason to go on fourth, but if you need a TD, then you've got to go. The fact that you get a possession no matter what the other team does makes it vital to be on offense second.

They reduced preseason and added what was the 4th preseason game to the regular season. Teams aren’t even allowed to put on the pads the first week in training camp. It’s basically walk-throughs the first few days and they did away with two a days years ago so they do care about the players health. Just look at all the rules changes to protect players. Had the player who got clotheslined yesterday got injured from that tackle, the clothesline tackle would probably be banned.

I’m curious if Shanny forgot the rule or if he just had a bad strategy. The players said they didn’t know the rule but surely Shanny told them to accept or defer. He couldn’t have left that up to a captain

It’s a rule that should have been changed years ago
