49ers players admit they didn't know the Overtime rules

They could have just listened to the ref when he did the coin toss ....
A captain isn’t making that decision. Shanny had to have told him to accept or defer. The question is did Shanny forget the rule or just have a bad strategy?

Lol you really believe that? If that was true, the sudden death OT would've never changed
You must not be following the game very closely if you don’t believe the league cares about players safety. Training camps aren’t anything like they used to be. Look at all the player safety rules. Every year a certain type of tackle is banned. They’re almost going too far trying to protect players.

I’m curious if Shanny forgot the rule or if he just had a bad strategy. The players said they didn’t know the rule but surely Shanny told them to accept or defer. He couldn’t have left that up to a captain
I don't know. Maybe he just thought it's better to take the ball first, score and put the pressure on the other team. I mean, if you don't score, then it's over with a field goal. If you score a TD, then the other team has to match that and also get the conversion to end it.

I would have deferred to see what I needed to win, but I don't think it's bad strategy to take the ball other than not knowing what you need to win. You have to have some trust in your defense that if you score, it will be able to step up and not allow the other team to respond.

The NFL should just play another quarter in the playoffs. 15 minutes. Whoever has the lead at the end wins.

If there’s a tie after that. Then go to the current rules.

Dummies got what they deserve. Know the rules. Coaching matters.

So what the hell did they think was happening? Chiefs was just taking their time to score?

If a cowboys player did this all we’d hear about how dumb and fat McCarthy is and how this is Jerry’s fault for the culture….

That's not what happened.

Kyle Shanahan knew the rules and explained his line of thinking postgame.

Had both teams scored a FG or a TD, the 49ers would've then gotten the ball in a sudden-death situation.
That makes sense when put like that

Don’t like that idea. Sudden death adds to the drama.

Sudden death was always dumb. Glad they changed it over time to where we are now. Each team needs to touch the ball once. You don't see MLB or NBA having sudden death extra time. Coin tosses should not have a huge impact on the winners of a game.

NFL's overtime in the playoffs is now perfect.
Neither of those games are as physical as the NFL

They're mainly add the rules to protect the offense, most of the rules don't provide any protection to the defense

They’re protecting players that are being tackled so there’s going to be more rules to protect offensive players. There are rules to protect the defense such as the chop block and blindside blocks. There’s other blocks that are banned.

Had this been Dallas there would be 40 pages of name calling. Just like every other day, carry on.
Well, that's one scenario we won't have to worry about with this current FO, Coaches, and players

We good and we runnin it back.

What's the relevance of this? Nothing is changed by this.

Shanahan knew the rules and made the decision on the coin toss.
The players not knowing didn't matter one bit, but now they've outed themselves for not doing their due diligence.

They reduced preseason and added what was the 4th preseason game to the regular season. Teams aren’t even allowed to put on the pads the first week in training camp. It’s basically walk-throughs the first few days and they did away with two a days years ago so they do care about the players health. Just look at all the rules changes to protect players. Had the player who got clotheslined yesterday got injured from that tackle, the clothesline tackle would probably be banned.
Nobody plays hard in a pre-season game that is not the same thing. It's a stupid rule that favors the team that wins a coin flip which is completely random, it doesn't save anyone from injury because overtime games rarely happen. It just should be eliminated. Bravo for doing it in the playoffs now do it in the regular season.

Everyone has an opinion and we don’t agree. No point going any further with it.
