What do you think backup QBs do all year? Just watch film and hand out water on the sidelines? How did Jordan Love sit for three years and then become a monster as an NFL starter? Recommending a guy sacrifice millions of dollars to to go play in the USFL against inferior competition is some of the worst advice I've ever heard.

Jerry traded a 4th for him last year and while I completely understand why that move is controversial and possibly a mistake he still demanded a 4th rounder. No way he doesnt have multiple suitors as a free agent next year.

Not recommending him to sacrifice millions of $. He will be offered vet minimum next year. He could make similar if not more starting in the USFL and get game experience.

It's either play in the USFL or not play at all. EZ decision.
There is not much of a market for a 3rd-string scrub team QB..LOL

Well that is pretty much what Emergency QB's do. They wear baseball hats and hold clip boards.

They don't even bother to put on their rib pads for crying out loud.

Lance's problem is trying to adjust to the speed of the game. He has never faced anything close to the speed he'll face against a 1st team Defense. He can't get that experience during training camp or preseason games. He needs to play and USFL is his only real option. Don't think he would start in the CFL for awhile.

LOL you guys are overthinking this! For now Lance is an insurance policy if Dak gets hurt. And you're going see Lance get a ton of pre-season work. Just relax.

Trance has been sitting for his entire life. Most QB's that get drafted started at least 2 years in HS, get a D1 Scholarship, played D1 and started multiple years.

I have never seen someone that never played QB, get drafted, sit for a few years to watch and learn how to play QB by osmosis.

This is blatantly false commentary.

He played QB in high school and in college. The only reason he didn't start 3 full seasons in college is because Covid wiped out almost all the 2020 season and he opted out of the 2021 season to go pro.

He did enough for pro scouts to consider him a high quality QB prospect coming out of college. Most projected him going very high in the 1st round.

And, again, it's nonsensical to pretend a guy who set an NCAA record for most passes without an interception, and was MVP of the National Championship game, has no knowledge of how to play QB.


The truth is - as opposed to what you post - he was only 20 years old when he was drafted. That made him very young and needing more maturity and time, not void of potential.

I would love to see it. It would be a step in the right direction for him.

- Powerful arm, throws a good deep ball
- Athletically gifted, more mobile than Dak and many other QB's
- Kyle Shanahan traded a boatload to acquire him. Kyle fell into Purdy and had to take the more proven commodity.
- By all accounts good work ethic, called a film junkie
- Said to have a high football IQ
- #3 overall pick, fairly unanimous 1st round talent. No one questions his raw ability and talent.
- Only 23 years old. If he played in week 18 of the 32 starting QB's only CJ Stroud and Bryce Young were younger at 22.
- When he's played in college and the NFL, he's played fairly well.

- His only real negative is experience. The worst thing you can say about him is he hasn't failed yet.

If that costs a 4th, I'm fine with it. Some think there isn't a team out there to give him more than vet minimum as a FA in 2025. That would be fine with me. If he shows any promise, sign him for double that to be our backup and have a viable cheap, young, talented option to step in for Dak when you can afford the cap hit.

I understand some fans don’t want to let Dak go.

100%. Lance wasn’t some grand plan - it was simply Jerry’s flawed 2nd round methodology. At least he burned a 4th round pick instead of a 2nd rounder. The seemingly dumb thing is the $ cost since Lance is on a 1st round salary.

I wonder if we offered him a bigger guarantee if we could get his salary cost down. I mean, $5 million these days isn't really that bad for a backup QB, but I'd like to see if we could work out a short extension. Since it's a roster bonus, he might be willing to negotiate it into a signing bonus so he gets his $4 million no matter what. Maybe we could turn it into a $6 million signing bonus on a three-year deal that escalates. Then we can get him down to $3 million this year, maybe $5 million in 2025 and $10 million in 2026. Of course, with a $19 million fifth-year option, he might not go for it, but with no guarantees he's even going to be worth a million, I think he'd want the guaranteed money for sure and especially if it is increased some.

I don't really like the idea of having just one camp to determine if he's worth keeping long term. If he plays well, then he gets some negotiating power without a longer-term deal in place. Under what I've laid out, if he plays poorly, Dallas is going to lose $4 million anyway (since the bonus kicks in before camp) so adding $2 million more to guarantee he's under contract for at least another year (and cut his hit this year) isn't that bad.

It also would be a palatable contract if some other team were to offer us a trade if he played well in the preseason. I know he hasn't done anything to deserve a new contract and might not, but we have to pay $5 million to keep him anyway this year, might as well lower that if we can while being able to keep him longer if we want.
