Are Hybrid cars the future?

Good point about the bullet trains.
Never have understood why the US does not have that type.
Who knows maybe someone like Amtrack blocks that kind of thing.

But it is curious how European and Asian areas have these trains that are so efficient and great for traveling long distances. Yet we do not have that type of thing. Have no clue of the quality of train services like Amtrack anymore, although it does seem like they have quite a few wrecks over the years. Grey Hound lines are the only other cheaper long distance travel options and I do not know if they are cheap anymore. I do know the last time I was on one in 91 or so headed to a duty station....it was nasty and very sketchy.
My guess is that it's too expensive to build and maintain. Think about it, if you have a business that gets people from point A to point B, you're going to do what makes you the most money. Even if you can fund something that gets people there 5 times faster, why would you do it if you'd be making less?

Think of air travel. Supersonic jets are by far better to cross oceans. Concorde was around for awhile. If it was profitable we'd see more supersonic airliners.

I wonder if people that bought Hybrids knew they were going to be charged a higher registration fee. Scroll down to the middle of the page, you'll see a list and fees for every state. For hybrid owners, you're paying a higher registration fee, and a gas tax.
I completely understand it for EVs, the state has to recoup the losses from gas taxes, but it's pretty ridiculous to charge the higher fees for hybrids. Especially if you're Ohio....$200 for a hybrid? That's ridiculous.

Yeah, notice I didn't mention EVs. That will eventually happen in every state if you get enough people buying EVs. But for hybrids? That's a discouragement.

It says “some hybrid” vehicles which likely means plug-in hybrids (PHEV) which have both a hybrid engine and can be plugged in and operate off an electric motor.

Most hybrids are not PHEVs.

No guesswork or assuming needed. The chart and key to that chart is right there. The amount would have a "d" next to it if it was plug in. Some have an "a" next to it and a 100-50. Which means plug in hybrid and regular hybrid. In Ohio you're paying 200 no matter what hybrid you have.

I might consider an EV in 20 years or so. They might have the tech at a reasonable level, and at a reasonable price by then.

I work in the auto industry so I get to see first hand how the EV market is shaping up, When I say the tech is not good enough in the USA, its very true. The moment BYD (chinese) brand hits the states, tesla and many other auto companies will be left in a panic because china is way ahead of the EV tech and they obviously don't share ideas but steal them and make it better and cheaper.

It'll be interesting to see if Chinese brands actually hit the US market....at least without tariffs attached to even the playing field.

I highly doubt there won't be something to even the playing field. No way they allow China to compete because it wouldn't even be close. Just look at batteries for lawn tools, they're like 5 times cheaper. Not as good, but not that far off.

If I had to buy an EV it would be one of the normal companies. Probably Tesla, but if not that, something in that price range. There is no reason to buy a Porche, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, or any other iconic brand if it's an EV. What are you paying more for? The engine is gone. What separates them from Tesla without the engine? Their name?

The sheet metal i.e., the design (interior/exterior), handling, technology, quality, et cetera.

Beyond that, it’s not like every brand uses the same generic EV engine.

You are correct, you are paying the premium for the engineering that was spent on quality parts and design. Just look at tesla, The quality on the assembly line is not great.

The quality of Tesla is quite fantastic imo. Built from the ground up as an electric vehicle, not like the others where they basically massaged ICE architecture into an electric vehicle. As of now no one competes with Tesla, the charging infrastructure is Best in Class, software for the car is Best in Class and it’s American made. Plenty of engineering videos on YouTube by Sandy Monroe doing entire car breakdowns piece by piece and bolt by bolt Comparing Tesla vs other EV manufacturers. Nothing is close! Sure you can find online people complaining about panel alignment etc but just look at this board here. People love to complain and ***** and moan. 2 years in on mine and zero service and zero problems and still fast as all get out! Elon has basically reimagined the automobile. Do I care about whether it is green or not, No. Do I care if it becomes the standard, No.

China is moving in quickly though. There is no way that the Big 3 will be able to compete, they are even having troubles now. The Big 3 are in for a Huge wake-up call imo, it won’t be pretty.

Similar story here. I’ve had zero issues with my Tesla. No panel gaps, zero maintenance issues, zero charging issues, still drives like the day I bought it.

I’m sure at one point the knocks on Tesla were legit as there has to be some misses when you first start manufacturing cars but speaking for myself and the Tesla owners I know the issues are severely overblown.

How is the battery life on your tesla? Have you notice any drops in mileage from day one till today?

Not a noticeable difference but to be fair I’m only a year in. I have the LFP battery which from what I’ve seen has a pretty good degradation rate but we shall see. If it really stays at a 1-2% reduction per year I’ll be pretty happy.
