OK, I see from the NFL website that the new KO will kill the "squib" kick. That one is dead because any ball that hits the ground before the "landing zone" automatically goes to the 40. Seriously penalty there.

Another tactic I can see is based on the rule that any ball hitting the landing zone and then rolling into the endzone will be placed at the 20 puts a premium on the returner getting to the ball if it is in the zone.

Willkickers start messing with a "Bend it like Beckham" type kick or will they just go with high and "hard to catch" or a simple touchback?

I wonder if they will have an option for this? Offer teams two kickoff formats. Regular return or onside kick.

Teams need a chance to win games in the dying seconds of the game.
There was talk before this rule change that teams would need to inform the refs and other team that they were going to attempt an onside kick. Regardless if they kept the same KO rules.

So now, yes, they will need to do that obviously now.

With the recent rules for steer wrestling tackles and now the new KO format there is certainly a more aggressive focus on injuries in the league by the rules committee.

  • Any kick that hits in the landing zone and then goes into the end zone - must be returned or downed by receiving team - if downed then touchback to B20 yard line
  • Kick hits in end zone, stays inbounds - returned or downed - if downed then touchback to B30 yard line
These rules will make things very interesting!!

Then score more points earlier in the game. They should just eliminate onside kicks altogether but already not they are nearly impossible

Wth? Why not just have the returner hold the ball at that spot and yell hike then run, why kick it off at all. Jeesh I swear the NFL just wants more points at any cost. I am thinking this is just another stupid change, just throw it up on all the other stupid changes
