So this popped up on youtube and Ive been watching it over last 2 nights. Here are some observations:

1) The field sucks. Worse than HS fields are today.
2) Absolutely no trash talk, celebrating routine plays.... NONE. Player gets a sack and gets up and goes to the huddle.Team gets a turnover and nobody running into the endzone doing stupid crap. Its GREAT!
3) Cowboys RB are in motion all over the place right up till the snap.
4)Game is much more fast paced. No extended commercials.
5)Punters suck compared to todays guys. Ram punter was avg 35 yards with a 2 second hang time.....lol
6) No begging for PI on every pass play.
7)1 replay and move on
8)QBs when on sidelines are actually standing and watching the game. You NEVER see that today
9) Charlie Waters was as good as I remember.
10) This one is worth repeating. A TD is scored and they go about their business. No dance, no trash talk, no running to find mama in the stands..... oh it is wonderful.
11) OJ Simpson in several commercials........ knowing his future was a little strange.
12) No game clock is show the entire damn game. It is very frustrating having no clue about game or play clock.

Pretty interesting watching this since I was only 8 when this was played.

You are so right on #2. It has been so long since that was the norm, it seems like another lifetime. All this celebrating and talking and shameless attention seeking makes me cringe. Just play the damn game, lol.
I think Ray Guy was the only good punter back then. Only punter I've ever heard mentioned from the 70s

yes it is, but this was true in the 90's too, no score or clock ,qrt shown.
But now days it is over kill , too much on the screen.

other than that though the older games are more fun to watch as the players were not big divas back then.
The nfl though encourages all the celebration crap though.

It's very refreshing to watch those old games that's when we were the real Dallas Cowboys.

A team with substance led by real men not a bunch of showboat Glory seeking players out to do nothing but promote their brand.

We were winners back then because the players cared about winning

Look up the Monday Night Special Sunday Edition game vs San Diego in 1981 I think. Maybe 1980. Danny White (Qb1 AND the Starting Punter) ran TWO fake punts on AUDIBLES he called himself. The 2nd one he didn’t even call it via the snap count, he just took off on his own without anyone else on the punt team knowing lol. Both resulted in first downs.

After that game we went to meet the team at the airport like we had several times after a huge road win. The airport was only about 20 minutes from the house. Back then there was no security like today. Anyone could go through the gates. And crowds often waiting on them.

I’ll never forget them coming off the plane. They were celebrating more than normal after a win. Dorsett & Hollywood were wearing mink coats. Little did I know a couple weeks later I’d be at SBXIII in Miami sitting on 35 yard line with Lilly’s tickets he gave my father.

The game back then was a product of its time
the game today is the product of its time
Same with the coverage

which is a sad comment on current times

Those looking down on people who prefer the old days frankly bore me

I have zero proof to back my opinion but I think 'professional' wrestling played a part in influencing player self-promotion through the decades. Both sports (I have a personal problem calling pro wrestling a sport) grew side-by-side.

Much of pro wrestling's growth was and is tied with its grandiose melodrama. Future NFL players grew up watching Mid-South Wrestling, etc., during the 70's, 80's and 90's and its stars be larger-than-life caricatures within that sport. The behavior began slowing mimicking its way into professional football.

Over time, the outlier behavior became the norm. I am not even certain why the term 'No Fun League' is even used anymore as far as watching the players are concerned. 'Super Fun League' would better describe how practically every down is expressed on the field nowadays.

Don't get me started with this flag football of today.

Also the footballs were a little harder to punt back then I can attest to that personally lol

Back then, the Rams and Cardinals were 2 teams that loved making Dallas wear blue jerseys

13) a QB actually capable of leading deep playoff runs and an owner not desperate to mug for the cameras. Bet they didnt show Murchison once.
I don’t recall Murchison ever being shown during the games. I’m not sure he even attended all the games. Most fans probably didn’t even know who the Cowboys owner was.

Landry frowned on celebrations and showboating. Most of the old school coaches did. In their day football was like gladiators fighting in the arena.

That must have been electric. What a Super Bowl to attend. The NFL was really starting to take off at that point to reach the heights it is at today as far as popularity, media and what not.

There’s something to be said for the old days when the game was basically a part time gig a few months a year.

Many fans probably don’t even realize until 1973 new blackout rule all of the home games weren’t televised. After 1973 they had to be blacked out if not sold out.

I wouldn’t want to go back . Mainly because of new technology where I can watch multiple games at home or watch them anywhere on my devices. But the game has evolved more to an entertainment entity than the game it once was.

The financial success for the players and franchises isn’t driven as much by the success on the field anymore. That’s probably worse aspect. And why winning isn’t as high a priority anymore for fame and profit.

I enjoy college football more now which was more popular than professional football back then. Tv coverage changed prof sports.

Yea. It was labeled as greatest SB at that time.

It was a brutal loss though. But we were used to. We’d already lost 2 SB’s and 2 NFL title games.

The old Orange Bowl was a dump. It stands shook. I’d never sat in a stadium so wobbly.

Most of the Cowboy fans were more white collar sitting in lower deck while blue collar Steeler fans were hanging from upper deck.

But the game wasn’t as close as score indicated . It was pretty much over down 3 scores. Two late scores made score close but the game was never in doubt in 4th qtr.
