Here is the link. Straight out of Kyle Shanahan's mouth. Shanahan clearly says he told Trey Lance he was no longer good enough to start, nor even be backup QB (QB#2 which was given to Sam Darnold after preseason 2023 competition), hence why he was demoting Lance to the 3rd string QB position.

If anyone insists to believe otherwise, you are simply in denial.

You kinda of hear what you want to hear. What he said was missing out on repetitions put Trey behind, Purdy won the starting job the year before, and Darnold was more polished. They would like to continued developing Trey, but Trey wanted to seek other opportunities.

I love the last comment by Shanahan, for those of you waiting for pre-season, we evaluate him everyday.

Does anyone think McCarthy would have this type of freedom to speak his mind like Shanahan???

We all know it would by Jerry making these comments.

If this were true, why put Sam Darnold (who is now with the Vikings) above Trey Lance??? The truth is Lance sucked so badly, Shanahan had no choice but to demote him to 3rd string. Lance didn't like it, so he pouted and demanded a trade (which happened). Now, we are stuck through this year with the 49ers garbage and overpaid for it.

They new it before camp. Shanahan is being nice. If they believed in Trance, they never would have paid Darnold $4.5M to back up Purdy.

How do you trade the guy talking crap about him?

I’ll never understand the angst about using a 4th on Lance.
Compounded with how the Cowboys did not draft a RB and Rd 4 would have been a prime position to do so.

In Reality the Cowboys stole him but the contract situation is not ideal. Factored in with Both Dak and Lance being free agents next year

I actually do think Tyrod Taylor could win a couple big games if need be, in the right situation. He was the best QB the Giants had. lol...which is stunning when you think about how the signed Danny pennies to a mega deal, thus marrying the team to him. The Giants will sink to the bottom of the ocean because of that deal, like the Titanic. Its a cautionary tale, hitching your wagon ie your business, to 1 guy, because if your wrong, its a terrible outcome. I think this is why Dallas got Lance...a preemptive move because they have serious misgivings about Dak. We can fault the Joneses for alot, but not on this. Lance may never be Rodgers, but what if he's a bit better than Dak? He'd come cheaper, YOUNGER and gives us some juice. If they are wrong, hey, it was a 4th round dart. No biggie.
I think He could have won a couple playoff games in Big D

I think people’s low expectations for Lance is more common sense than ‘just looking at 4 games’. Most people realize the fact that Lance spent a couple years with a coach that can make chicken salad out of chicken —— with other QBs, yet he still felt very comfortable parting with him for peanuts even after the franchise gave up so much to acquire him in the first place. He was seen in practice every day by this coach…so it’s not a stretch to make general assumptions on what he thought.
Cowboys gave Amari up for peanuts after giving up a lot to acquire him . . . Sometimes it just be that way

No it isn't. He said "if Shanahan let him go he ain't no good" and no one can prove that's true. Did Shanahan say it? Where's the link?
Sorry but this is utterly ridiculous. What HC is going to say “hey we were wrong, this guy really sucks!”

There was a reason Shanahan was will to part ways, and a reason he was traded for peanuts.

If he had more years on his contract I would say it was a good trade. However, we acquired him mid year last year so that was a wasted year. Now we are in the last year of his contract and he will probably only get to see time in preseason games which tells you absolutely nothing. Will Grier looked like a beast in preseason and he is now jumping from practice squad to practice squad. If he couldn't win with the weapons and coaching in SF he sure as heck isn't winning in Dallas. We should have kept that 4th round pick and grabbed a RB in the draft. Below are some of the RBs drafted right after that pick (4th #124) and between our next pick at 174. That 4th round pick would have been the perfect time to fill the RB need.

125 Bucky Irving
127 Will Shipley
128 Ray Davis
129 Isaac Guerendo
132 Sione Vaki
134 Braelon Allen
147 Audric Estime
165 Rasheen Ali
166 Tyrone Tracy
167 Keilan Robinson
173 Isaiah Davis
Why did you include the word win? It is not about "Winning" it is about playing fine. There is only one ball and Purdy is a genius in Shanahan's system. There was no need to go back to Lance.

Jerry stepped in it again. Only thing left is for Lance to prove his worth. I for one think Lance would excel in Big Mike's system and I also believe BiG Mike could do wonders with him

This season should be exciting

And sent the pick and cash to the Niners.

Haven’t read through every post, but I haven’t seen this mentioned….

Even if Lance actually gets into games this season, if he has any measure of success, aside from having to pay him as a FA, if you don’t retain McCarthy, you’re asking him to learn an entirely new offense, and he may not have that same success in that case.

Just wish the majority would try to stop making sense of this deal and realize it was nothing more than Jerry wanting to play with his toy.
What if Lance gets on the field and Mike makes him an MVP candidate with a simplified offense . . . you know . . . kind of like last year

Then every body is happy and extended

Plenty of reasons first being you don't want your chosen starter looking over his shoulder, especially in that scenario (you have a QB on the roster that you traded multiple 1st rounders for, and literally the last player taken in the draft) ANY STRUGGLE, media and fans alike would be calling for the higher pick to start.
Many on the Locker room and fan base are of the opi ion Lance is the more talented QB and should have been the starter

So they decided to bring in Darnold and pay him even more than Trance? How does that make sense.
They got Purdy and they were not going to back him up with an equally young Trey lance. They needed some level of experience.

Ok, Lance didn’t play fine or good either. He looked bad with the 49ers. So bad that Jerry was the only one dumb enough to give up a 4th rounder for him. Dallas isn’t even confident he can be the backup QB and beat out Rush at this point. That says all I need to know.

I am glad Jerry was the only one willing to give up a 4th because it guaranteed The Cowboys got him. Confident? Gove it time
