Mazi Smith PFF grades over the season

It would appear he is improving...although I also don't put much stock into their grading. They've clearly seen different things than me in regards to certain players in certain games.

If you look at what opposing running backs have done to the Cowboys in recent weeks; outside of that big 45 yard touchdown by Joe Mixon it hasn't been much. The running QB's like Hurts and Daniels have made the run defense look worse than it actually has been.

Mazi has been improving and has been doing his job. In fact I saw a video on YouTube that said Mazi's PFF grade the past three weeks would have him at 14 overall in the NFL had it been his overall season grade.

Not saying he's suddenly great, but it's clear he's playing a lot better.

Well let's hope the light has finally come on for Mazi!!

Player development is not a switch that suddenly turns on. There is a reason why they constantly talk about day to day and putting in the work. We all know it takes time to develop DT.

He still has had some stinkers and repeats mistakes. This season makes it a struggle to keep an open mind.

Ill start by saying I dont put a ton into PFF's overall grade. Their value to me is in stat tracking. However its showing a clear trend

Week 1: 30.4
Week 2: 30.2
Week 3: 33
Week 4: 88.4
Week 5: 32.1
Week 6: 49.5
Week 7: 49.3
Week 8: 27.4
Week 9: 63.4
Week 10: 55.9
Week 11: 69.6
Mazi is proving to be a rotational defensive tackle but he has a long way to go to be first round pick worthy. Hopefully a good end of season followed by a strong offseason will do the trick.

What I’ve noticed is his attitude - am I the only one that’s seen him “chirping” quite a bit after plays lately. Looks like a player that may finally be invested in his craft. Last year and early this year, he just looked like a guy that was going through the motions. There was no emotion to his play. THAT is my opinion on what may be changing. And, I think he may be better at a traditional DT than at NT - his major malfunction at NT is his anchoring ability isn’t that good. I’d like to see him with a REAL NT.

Enough there in the last 3 games to hope he has figured it out, but a long road ahead

I have noticed him improving as the season progresses. Hopefully, it continues and into training camp 2025. Draft another solid DT to put on that line and we might be cooking
except it will probably trigger many in here if they take one of the two who allegedly are some of the best in the draft Michigan interior D lineman yeah buddy yee haw... Imagine having 2 Michigan players on the inside and scoot makers making some plays Oh yeah does Michigan hating fan base they won't be happy... We will be talking about for years how they passed up on Jeanty lol

He is improving, but it really seems like he's going to develop into a fine rotational player at best.

His anchor against double teams is still pretty poor. He's not really the space eater that he was projected to be, but I would take it if he can turn into a good part of the rotation.

Let's hope he keeps improving. This team needs him to be good, otherwise DT is going to continue to be an issue in the coming seasons. Can't fix it all in one draft.

It would be nice if we extend Mazi at a salary that is equivalent to a marginal rotation player and he ends up outplaying his contract. Wouldn’t that be a welcome change from the Cowboys’ norm.

he sucks. he should be a solid starter and big contributor as a first round pick. now in second year, some people celebrate one good game out of 11!!!!

he needs to be cut. but we won't. Jerry hates to cut players in the middle of contract if he has paid a large bonus up front.

Mazi is here to stay for 4 years. his 5th year option will not be picked up

I"d be thrilled with Mason Graham as our 1st rounder. I'd be shocked if he didnt pan out. Guy is a stud. I am a huge Jeanty fan but games have always been won or lost in the trenches.

Well they're talking about having both those defensive tackles that play next to each other at Michigan could both go in the first round so be prepared there will be a nice little group in here that will be triggered hardcore

I wanna fight that mayne!!! Set it up
That reminds me of something...I was doing a radio show a few years ago, they asked me...,your skill players have 7 on 7 games during the off season, what do your linemen do? I told them we'd throw a pizza on a wrestling mat and let the lineman fight for it....what kinda pizza do you like? Lol

A few people might be right about Mazi and his march to be a decent player in the NFL. It's going to take time for him to learn and execute his style of play.
