ESPN: McCarthy wouldn't budge from 5 yrs, Joneses wouldn't budge from 3 yrs

And just me, I'm suspicious that Joneses started at 2 but ultimately said they'd be willing to do 3. That's why, then, they couldn't get to a compromise at 4 yrs.

I admire Mike for sticking to his guns, because if I were him, I'd consider 2 to be an insult, and 3 not sufficient. 4 would have been my minimum.

At the same time, I cannot not admire Joneses for capping it at 3. If I were them, I would have done exactly the same thing. If I'm just looking for someone who could win regular season games, then I'd be willing to do 4, but the prospect of more of the same post season futility would just be too much. In fact, it is only because Mike McCarthy does have a SB ring (attesting to the fact it's plausible he could have a break through) that I'd be willing to go beyond 2.

To me, they were both right.

:hammer:neither wanted this to work. In reality it didn’t work.

..wow....!! have to commend Jerry on this. Cant imagine 5 more yrs of McCarthy, IF he couldn't get it done.

He gave him five went 1 for 3.

There’s no assurances they’ll be another opportunity. He was available and no one wanted him.
Not on his terms though so he balked. Jerry wanted him and if he had a scarcity mentality he'd have just taken what was given to him. Again, does Mike look like he follows a scarcity mindset (an even more cleverly-veiled fat joke)?

I guess it could have been a 5-year deal with most of the money paid during the first 3 years so firing McCarthy would not have stung so much.

Again, we can debate if McCarthy should have been back. That is a different debate. The issue is Dallas had all year long to evaluate, plan and make a decision quickly. To see them drag this out and someone be left with their pants down is such clownish behavier. 2,3,4, 5, 6 years in an accounting error for the Cowboys. To see them run this team like a Burger King franchise is so depressing.
Total clown show. It ultimately comes down to being tied to Dak and his dumb contract.

Jerry didn’t want to commit long term because of his 1-3 playoff record. He was brought here to take the Cowboys to the next level and that didn’t happen. He basically gave McCarthy a take it or leave it. No one knows what’s going on in McCarthy’s head but he was clearly put off by the lack of commitment. Jerry wasn’t all in with him.

Nope. Mike was delusional thinking a 5 year contract. He did not even earn the right to have came back from that Green Bay fiasco. IMO

Does Mike look like he's starving to you? I think he can afford to wait out another opportunity he'd like better if he wants it.
Jerry was the only one willing to hire him off his couch the last time he was out of the NFL. I doubt he gets any offers next cycle.

Here's my issue with all this - and with Jerry and Stephen in particular - you first decide if McCarthy is your guy. If he is, give him a contract that reflects that. If he isn't, then part ways and find your guy. Only wanting to give him two years, and grudgingly going to three, says you're not fully confident in him. If so, why even bring him back at all?

Seems crazy to me that they could not compromise at 4 years.
Seems like a no brainer.

Sometimes a man has to have the stones to walk away when the offer is below what you believe you're worth. Men of reknown are seldom the "just be grateful" types.
Agree 100%. Clearly he isn't hurting for the $$$. It's a crazy game(contracts/negotiations) and some wont understand, but sometimes you have to walk away...
