Mazi Breakout Incoming?

We're about to learn for certain whether or not Mazi actually wants to excel at his job. A first round pick shouldn't require taking indefinitely to become worthy of retaining. His current standing isn't a joking matter. It's becoming past time for him to prove he belongs on this team.

If Mazi's desire is missing, maybe it's fair to conclude that he should best be missing, too. If he doesn't take his job seriously, obviously, it's best to find someone who will.

As a Michigan fan, I was a fan of Mazi in college but not of his slow development. The same seems to be true for him in the NFL. But looking at next gen stats and AI analysis of the position... a breakout could be coming.

"based on observations and data, many DTs see a significant rise in their role and impact after a few seasons, often around their 3rd or 4th year."

The talent is there. The preparation time has been put in... what what about the coach? Eberflus is a fan: "Yeah, I'm excited about Mazi," Eberflus said, via the team's website. "I liked him coming out. He's a real explosive athlete, with a big body type that can move really well. Excited about bringing his game to the next level, and he could certainly do that."

Mazi appeared to "turn the corner" late last year and with the appropriate amount of "seasoning"... I think he could be posed for a breakout this year.
I hope so. He, Guyton, Sam Williams are guys we need to be impactful players. If all 3 had great years and we draft well this is a different team. But that’s a lot of hoping

I won't hold my breath.

BUT if Mason Graham SOMEHOW falls to #12, Dallas would be foolish to not draft him.

His jersey number is 58 which is usually a LB number. Totally makes since because he gets blown up and driven into the LB position on almost every snap. 1st round pick got paid and thats it folks. He is a major liability on defense. Call it a day and move on please.

Respectfully disagree.
Next year his 4th year rookie salary as a first rounder is significant, 4.2 mil and all can be saved if you cut him. You get a solid young draft pick and he's costing you about 1 mil.
No way his 5th year is getting picked up unless he goes Aaron Donald this year (which is likely not happening). I'm a UofM guy, so I was hopeful for him, just thought he was overdrafted. I remember the playoff game that year, when Steve Avila (who was an NFL prospect) just destroyed Mazi, and Mazi just gave up. I mean Avila just owned him and Mazi looked like he wanted off the field. That showed me a lot. As a DT, you can lose snaps, but you can't give up. I just don't think the mental toughness is there, despite the obvious physical tools. Mazi actully would have been better served as a later pick, with no expectations. He could have developed mentally for the NFL slowly. As a first rounder, with high expectations, he just wasn't tough enough mentally. My hope is he can be developed into a solid, rotational players at least, which is still possible IMO.
He plays a different position than Donald. A more apt comparison would be Vita Vea or Tavondre Sweat. Vince Wilfork back in the day.

Sam Williams is a name that I tend to forget about after his injury last year. He could be a "post breakout, sleeper" to use the fantasy terminology!

He wears 58?

Huh. I could never tell, because of the way his enormous man-mammaries and back blubber stretch the numbers so wide.

The back of his neck literally looks like a pack of hotdogs

I didn’t read this entire thread I’m sure there are some good perspective's

The cowboys need to hope that Mazi takes the next step if they want to be competitive. They have multiple needs to address in the draft and spending another high pick on dline shouldn’t be that high with the osa signing and just addressing it 2 years ago

That said if that’s the direction they go then it’s telling. Maybe eberflus can build on what has been laid. Otherwise it’s his last year here as a building block and his 5 th year option won’t be picked up
