Can Brian Schottenheimer be more than Jason Garrett 2.0

I just dont see it with him. He basically sucked at every position he was in his coaching career. He led one of the worst Offenses in football last season. Seems like a typical Jerry "Yes-Man" type of hire. I get serious Jason Garrett 2.0. vibes with him.

If the Cowboys would have been serious about changing culture and winning they would have not made the lazy pick again. Ben Johnson would have been my favourite this offseason.
Actually, he didn't lead one of the worst offenses last season.

They made him the fake OC and let McCarthy lead the offense.

They didn't even think enough of him to let him be the real OC.

That's right! You tell em, brother. MM ran the offense, let's give BS a shot, before we compare him to that idiot, Garrett......he sucks!

I don't see it either.
He is handicapped already having two meddling owners. A defense that sucks. An offense that maybe improved in paper and despite the RG pick has huge HUGE question marks at tackle spots. No WR2 and we saw how the TEs regressed and dealing with improved teams in the east.
He's like another Wade Phillips....got his job because of his dad, as well as his opportunity to be a HC. Wade was a great DC and a really nice guy, but he didn't have the leadership abilities, needed to be a good HC. Hopefully, BS will do a better job, time will tell.

Calling him JG 2.0 would be a compliment for him. Unfortunately, that's still not a good thing for us.

Schottenheimer seems like a really down to Earth guy who isn't talking just to show us how smart he is. And the behind the scenes talk is that he really connects with people...the importance of that can't be underestimated.

There are lots of people that never got a chance. Wade Phillips was considered a great coordinator but took a long time to get a shot. Garrett on the other hand had a few years as an assistant and suddenly is given the reins. I am gonna guess that Brian won't have the same learning curve that many first time head coaches have.

Now, the question is do we have the talent to seriously compete? I think on paper this team is probably somewhere from a 6 to 8 team win. If he can get 2 or 3 more than that I think he will have done a great job. Right now the only positions that we have that have standout players are WR1, LG, DE, and maybe corner with Bland. Tradition is that teams need to be great up the middle on offense and defense as well as having a great blindside QB protector. We are pretty much lacking at all of those spots....at least not as relating to being great.

I just wrote a similar reply...but I think already we are seeing more leadership than we ever saw from Wade.

Yup, this is exactly what it is. History is repeating itself. At least Shotty has actual coaching experience. That’s more than you could say about Garrett.

Not me.

Big Mike still has a successful resume and a Super Bowl ring.

Jason Garrett was gifted his jobs by Jerry Jones.

Couldn’t even cut it as an offensive coordinator afterwards.

And now he can’t even get a job in coaching.

He can stick to being creepy on television.
Ya Im not sure why anyone would want Garrett over McCarthy. Except maybe to get attention

I don’t blame people for being skeptical, but as I have said in other threads the Schotty hire is growing on me. I can’t say that he’s going to be awesome, but he is different than what we have had.

I think MM was a better coach than what we have had but he had some holes in his game and in the end I think he was just drawing a check.

I believe that Schotty may be a legitimate coach. I’m at least willing to give him some time to see if there are flashes that he get us to the SB before I write him off.

So far he seems genuine, and I think that the Cowboys are actually letting him actually COACH a little so far by adapting their draft to what Schotty wants. It appears to be the best draft that we have had in quite some time.

The good news is that the NFL has made it so that we can no longer have 8-8 seasons for 3 years in a row!

The whole hiring process and surprise of the Joneses when they were unable to retain McFraud just seemed as though no legitimate new hires were the intention.
Schott is the epitome of the comfort hire for their 60 million dollar a year investment not having to learn a new offense in year 10.
And yeah, his past resume does absolutely nothing to support a promotion but more a sad failing up circumstance in obtaining the position.
Although all the surrounding coordinator position hires appear good with fresh eyes on the surface, the true test will come once genuine adversity is faced.
The schedule is a major challenge.
I have serious doubts he can even match the Garrett bar of overall playoff success.

Agreed except working for Jerry and all that entails means this is literally the worst job in the league, so you are only going to get either a desperate burned out retread or a desperate unqualified newbie.

Jason Garrett's coaching resume, including his brief stint as offensive coordinator, was a joke even when the interim head coaching position was handed to him. I have no clue how Brian Schottenheimer's experience will ultimately serve him as a head coach but there is no comparison between his resume and Garrett's on Day One. I will not insult Schottenheimer with a nickname of Garrett 2.0 for that reason alone.
